I just received an email from Target. I do not shop at Target and I never give out the email address where I received this one.

It is a scam! Be aware!

It's easy enough to check if it's a scam. Go to the Target website and see what they have sent out. They HAVE recently sent out an email that says that a person's name, address, phone and email may have been obtained. That email isn't a scam.

I also received the same email and I did shop 1 time in December at Target. I don't remember giving my email address but in the past may have ordered from them.

I got the email also and rarely shop at Target- maybe once or twice a year. Last time was over the summer! I believe they're sending this email out to a wide range of people (everyone & anyone!) just to cover themselves for class action lawsuits. CYA - they can't do it enough in a situation like this!

I got one today. I don't know if it's legit or not, as I have heard there actually IS a legit one out there. But I deleted it, anyway.

Hopefully, my info is safe. I never go out to the store and only occasionally shop there, online, with a Target card. The only reason the card is good for that is that they give you free shipping and an additional percentage off your order for using it.

"Millions of people have gotten a suspicious email from Target in the last couple days informing them that their personal information may have been stolen in the recent data breach.

The email offers customers a year of free credit monitoring through Experian, which includes identity theft insurance.

That sounds great, except no one trusts that the email is actually from Target...

...But this particular email is actually legitimate, as is the domain and the offer of a year of free credit monitoring. Target confirmed the email's validity on a website the retailer is using to log all its communication with consumers.

The reason why some people are getting the email who haven't shopped there recently is because the hackers may have stolen personal information that the retailer had on file, including names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.

Target could have retained that information from a purchase you made many years ago."

Same here, the exact same message is on Target's website. However, I am going to link to the identity theft protection offering from Target's website, not via the e-mail.

I received the same letter and signed up with Experian. I purchased one Christmas gift on-line and that's all for a very long time at Target, but it doesn't hurt to be safe and sign up for the free protection.

Same here, the exact same message is on Target's website. However, I am going to link to the identity theft protection offering from Target's website, not via the e-mail.

That would be the way to go, to be safe, if one were inclined to want this 'protection'.

Thanks for the info. The email may be legit, but I do not use the email address they used for correspondence. It has it's purpose. I don't understand how they could have obtained this email address. I won't open it even if it is legit. Not taking the chance.

I don't shop there at all EXCEPT about 1 1/2 yrs ago, I purchased a wedding gift - online - from their wedding registry. Had to give my email addy when making the purchase.

2 days before Xmas (Dec. 2013), my debit card got hit with a $413 charge at a ToysR Us in Vineland, NJ (I live in the Midwest).

So I signed up for the free 1-yr credit report protection that Target was offering in the email they sent.

I betcha in 5-10 years time, we will all be buying with cash instead of credit cards.

That works for local shopping most of the time, but the trend is to more and more Internet shopping. Where's cash in that kind of transaction?

I don't shop at Target typically and did use cash when I made a purchase just before Christmas. Didn't matter as one of my CC companies was notified that my card had been part of the breach and had to cancel my card and send me a new one. I hadn't used that card at Target in over a year! Turns out the breach was much more widespread than first reported. This security issue is not unique to Target, many retailers keep their info the same way and it could have happened to any of them. Target was just the unlucky one the hackers chose to crack.

I did too and i hadnt shopped there for months when they were infiltrated. Maybe this was there plan all along. Then after being breached send out an email to get info.

I got the same e-mail, from Target.

When I tried to enroll for the free credit monitoring, the site requested my Social Security Number.....

This seemed to me a "red flag".

I'll write Target a check , or use cash,next time I shop there.

The credit monitoring was to be from Experian, a trusted site. I just didn't want to "over-inform" online by giving out my Social Security number. Pretty sad when we have reason to distrust so much.
