Remember the old fashioned dill or sour pickles that were sold one at a time from a barrel ? Dill or sour pickles just do not seem the same anymore. Another favorite was the half sour pickles sold at a deli. They do not seem the same

either, if you can even find them.

Well, being a pickle lover ( and all my children are too) , Claussen spears or halves are our present favorites. They are always kept in the supermarket refrigerator case.

Recently, we tried a little experiment after finishing a jar of Claussen spears. I sliced a small unpeeled, pickling cucumber into

1/4 inch disks and put them in the Claussen pickle juice. After a couple of days in the refrigerator, I tasted one. I thought that it tasted like the deli half sour

pickles. Without telling my son and my daughter my discovery, I had them taste them. They both immediately said "these taste like the half sour deli pickles". I'm thinking,"but this is dill pickle juice".

No matter, we have found a way to enjoy the taste of half sour pickles again. In fact,

I now have a jar with three more little sliced cucumbers in Claussen pickle juice.

If you are a fan of half sours, you may like these.

She always told her friends that I never begged for candy, but would beg for a pickle. I still love pickles and buy them in the gallon jars when I can.

cookin

Never heard of half sour pickles but Claussen's is my favorite dill pickle. I go through periods where I crave pickles and have even had them for breakfast before. Mt Olive makes a good dill pickle that seems to be a bit fresh, both in taste and crispness, called Simply Pickles. Mt Olive is from NC so don't know if it's available everywhere.

I've heard...and totally not sure it's true...that Chick Fil A brines their chicken in pickle juice. Guess I should find ways to use all that leftover pickle juice since I eat so many.

When growing up alot of Jewish delis's always sold pickels in the barrel. They were so good! Also alot of Jewish deli restaurants always had pickles in a bowl on the tables. Of course this was before the pandemic so I really don't know if this will continue. If they don't it will be very sad.

Other pickles that are very good are Nathan's Sour Pickles...my DH favorite. Also Nathan's pickled tomatoes are excellent...my favorite. If you like garlic in your pickles, I highly recommend Boar's Head pickles. Just found these and the are sooo good.

Thanks for the Claussen idea. This sounds very interesting. We always have Claussens in the house and will definetly give this a try.
