Does anyone have a recipe which comes close to the wonderful flavor and moistness of My Grandma's Coffee Cake of New England? I know they come in many varieties, but what is the recipe for the basic coffee cake?

I did a search for you and came up with this recipe. I had bought the Coffee Cake from the Q and it came to me all broken and just fell completely apart. It was very good, but could not serve to company. Anyway:

Grandma Glady's Coffee Cake Recipe (Makes 1 12-inch cake)

 For the Cake Batter
1/2 cup butter or margerine (I prefer butter)
1 cup of sugar
2 cups all purpose flour, sifted
1 tsp baking powder (I use double acting)
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream (use regular, not light)
1 tsp vanilla

For the Streusel Toppings and Fillings
1/2 cup of brown sugar, packed
1/2-1 cup of chopped walnut (I used close to 1 1/4 cup cos I love walnut)
1 tsp cinnamon powder

Directions
1. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl. Set aside. Preheat oven at 350F. Grease and flour a 10 cups tube pan (about 12-inch).
2. In your stand mixer or a bowl, cream butter and sugar till light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla till well combined.
3. Add in flour, alternate with sour cream and mix till batter is well combined. (Batter will come out really thick)
4. In a bowl, combine brown sugar, walnuts, and cinnamon. Mix well.
5. Scoop half the cake batter into tube pan. Spread till you get an even layer.
6. Sprinkle half the streusel mix evenly onto the cake batter.
7. Top with remaining cake batter. Spread to get an even layer, enough to cover the streusel filling.
8. Top cake with remaining streusel. Sprinkle to get an even layer.
9. Bake for 40 to 45 mins. ( I usually set the timer at 40 minutes and check. It should be done by then.)
10. Rest cake for 20 minutes before removing from pan. Slice only when cake has cooled completely as it will crumble and fall apart if you give into temptation to slice the cake when it was still warm.

Grandma Gladys Coffee Cake

Thanks, PhotoQueen. I baked Grandma's recipe and it was really good. It's not at all like Grandma's New England Coffee Cake which QVC sells. Nevertheless, yours is a good recipe and will make it again. Not too hard and worth the effort.

this is Ina's recipe, NYC1 is right it is DELICIOUS. I first made it as one of her box mixes she had out a while back. Last year she stopped making the mixes as they were not cost effective. But when I wrote about this, they emailed me and said her recipes are the same recipe as the boxed mixes...only you make them fresh! I have had Grandma's, and this is better

Ingredients

12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

3 extra-large eggs at room temperature

1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 1/4 cups sour cream

2 1/2 cups cake flour (not self-rising)

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

For the streusel:

1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

3 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

3/4 cup chopped walnuts, optional

For the glaze:

1/2 cup confectioners' sugar

2 tablespoons real maple syrup

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan.

Cream the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment for 4 to 5 minutes, until light. Add the eggs 1 at a time, then add the vanilla and sour cream. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. With the mixer on low, add the flour mixture to the batter until just combined. Finish stirring with a spatula to be sure the batter is completely mixed.

For the streusel, place the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, and butter in a bowl and pinch together with your fingers until it forms a crumble. Mix in the walnuts, if desired.

Spoon half the batter into the pan and spread it out with a knife. Sprinkle with 3/4 cup streusel. Spoon the rest of the batter in the pan, spread it out, and scatter the remaining streusel on top. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until a cake tester comes out clean.

Let cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes. Carefully transfer the cake, streusel side up, onto a serving plate. Whisk the confectioners' sugar and maple syrup together, adding a few drops of water if necessary, to make the glaze runny. Drizzle as much as you like over the cake with a fork or spoon.

shoekitty, thank you for the recipe.......sounds like a yummy keeper!

My Grandma's uses Madagascar vanilla (which I have on the shelf). I think I'll toast the walnuts to see if that's closer in flavor.

Anyone have suggestions on what size bundt pan you can use instead of the tube pan?

Snowpuppy,

The toasted walnuts sound perfect. I always add a touch more Vanilla myself, and use Madagascar as well, an organic version.

little miss sunshine

Truely this cake is good. It is moist, not overly sweet, cuts beautifully, and when stored correctly gets better the second day.. Everytime I make it I have a little trouble getting the struesel filling centered, LOL. It is not a ton of struesel filling in the center, but try to get it more even if you can. I get spots where there isn't any, then some where there is a little more. I think I need new glasses!

As I said I started out buying her mixes for this. I loved them so well I purchased them a few more times until she quit making them. The recipe is right on the money. Also, I would recommend her OLD FASHIONED BANANA CAKE. It is almost like a banana bread cake. Great for a coffee cake.

ETA

I remember making 1.5 times the recipe for the streudel the second time I made it. I liked more streudel on top. But you have to cook it a bit more

I made Ina's recipe this morning and all I can say is "I'm in big trouble!"

It is so delicious and it is sitting on my counter calling my name. I said I'd just have a tiny sliver to try it, that turned into a wedge, lol.

What a great recipe!

Only changes I made were that I used all purpose flour, pecans instead of walnuts and apple pie spice instead of just cinnamon.

Perfect recipe for over night guests or to give as a gift.

My husband and son will be happy when they get home in the -25 wind chill, to this delicious treat.

Thanks for the recommendation

Decisions, decisions. Should I make this coffee cake, with all purpose flour, thanks Lynneuk for the tip about using regular flour, or applesauce bread from LBM today. I am not sure I have enough sour cream tho, and it is too cold to go out to the store. I will be checking the frig.

This has nothing to do with a sour cream coffee cake, but has to do with Ina Garten. Her new series starts this weekend on Sunday on the Food Network. Thought Ina Garten's fans here might like to know.
