Green Bean Casserole

DH loves GBC and I always have it for holiday meals. I usually buy the fozen GG one. This year I could not find it anywhere. Finally found it at a grocery store where we hardly ever shop. No,I won't make it from scratch unless I HAVE to.

Made it back in the 50,S, but can,t stand it today. My taste buds have changed. The one dish I pass up. My daughter makes it, her kids love it,

I thnk it is an "in" thing to say you do not like it. LOL DH doesn't much care.

I made it one year because I was asked to. The requester declared it "glop" after tasting it.

So much for trying to do something nice for someone

My husband tried it and said I didn't ever have to make it for him. Ever. I got his drift.

I've never seen it premade in the stores. However, it's pretty easy to throw together.

Seems I used the recipie on the Fried French Onion container. They had these oversized containers of them specifially for the GB dish.

I have tried that dish several times and just do not like it one bit. My DH would make it for Thanksgiving. He finally gave up because I think he was the only one who would eat it. It looks gross and it tastes gross. But for those of you who like it, enjoy, LOL!.

I would be happy if Thanksgiving were just Turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pie. That is all I need!

Pioneer Woman has a family-sized green bean casserole on the market, which I found hidden away on an upper freezer shelf at Kroger's grocery store. Too curious not to try it at least once.

If you find this product and heat it, you might agree that it needs a longer cooking period than the box recommends, unless you like your green beans somewhat thick and a little crunchy.

We did like it, though, because it wasn't a mess of mush.

It is somewhat better and different than the classic green bean casserole that folks are used to.

HONEY BAKED HAM stores also carry frozen family-sized green bean casseroles. Never tried them, but know that the company sells the same product online.

My MIL served that green bean casserole for every occasion she hosted for decades. She thought it was the best thing ever; I ate it once, then passed on it for many, many years. Never could understand what was so great about a bunch of canned goods thrown together.

Perhaps because I don't like anything from a can? Seems like all I could taste was the metal residue of those cans and too much salt from the processing!

What's so difficult about snapping real green beans (or frozen) with EVOO and some wonderful spices? That's heavenly eating IMO.

My mother never made this either, never had it while growing up.

But in my adulthood I decided to make it to see what the hoopla was about. It was awful, just a canned-tasting mushy salty mess, nobody liked it so ended up tossing it.

I'm not a big fan of the classic green bean casserole either. A few years ago I needed a veggie dish for Thanksgiving. I substitued cream of broccoli soup (or broccoli cheese soup) and cooked broccoli, along with the rest of the ingredients from the classic recipe. It came out very good.

I like it but prefer to have regular green beans instead. When I make it, I use Cream of Celery (and have even used Cream of Chicken) instead of the mushroom soup. I also love @ECBG 's suggestion to use frozen green beans. I don't know why I've never thought of that before as I normally use frozen if I'm having Green Beans.

@shoptilyadropagain My issue with this dish was I could always taste the can in respect to the green beans. I love mushrooms and totally got rid of the flavor I couldn't stand by changing the form of the beans.

If I don't have fresh green beans which I have cooked, I will cook some frozen green beans for myself as another green vegetable. DH doesn't like them, but he will string beans (most of the time the complaints are few. Holiday meals are a totally different matter, however)!!!

Well, I admit to liking it, lol. I use canned beans, we prefer Kroger Very Green green beans because they look pretty and are tasty. I can't stand mushrooms, so I also use cream of celery soup and skip the milk and salt, no extra liquid. I am generous with the pepper. I like to stick to the French's brand for the crispy onions and I'm generous with those too. My family likes it and it's not mushy, mostly because none is left over. We have also made this with frozen green beans as well.

@shoptilyadropagain Mother made it once back in the 60's I guess when the recipe first came up. Nobody liked it. We would do "real" green beans and people ate those.

Sometimes we'd just use those flat green beans (Allen makes them) out of the can beause we all liked them and we'd do fresh when we weren't so busy.

We have LeSueur green beans out of the can pretty often--they are way better than any other canned bean I've ever had. In the summer we do fresh most of the time.

@Sooner I can eat canned green beans but definitely prefer fresh and then frozen. I've seen the Allen brand in the grocery stores around here but have never had them. I've never heard of LeSeur.
