@Kachina624, I hope you didn't mean to sound so rude. Some of us grew up in the 50s when our moms made dried beef on toast for a meal. My mother made a white sauce and added chopped up dried beef from the little glass jar, and served it on toast. My parents were blue collar workers - this was a staple once a month, and we sure didn't think it was dog food. My hubby and I remember those days and I still occasionally make this for the two of us. And no, I don't have dogs and I don't consider it dog food. BTW - this meal was a staple of the WW2 era....sorry that it's dog food to you.

OMG. I have not thought of making this in years, but I am going to fix it really soon. Hubby won't touch it because he won't eat gravy type food. (foolish man). We had this when I was a kid in the 50's at least for one meal a week. My mother always added just a tiny sprinkle of curry powder. Guess a lot of GI's from the war brought this recipe home to the wives to cook. Sometimes she used hamburger instead. Thanks for the memories.

Yum I remember eating SOS when I lived at home. I make it every once in a while. We have not ate it for quite some time.

It's like sausage gravy we like on biscuits.

Easy way to make it is to fry 1 lb of sausage, drain grease, sprinkle 1 packet of McCormicks original gravy over sausage, add 2 cups water, turn up heat to get bubbling, turn down let simmer & keep stirring to thicken. YUM!!!

I make this & put in the freezer. DH takes to work to eat for breakfast sometimes.

Yes you can make your own gravy to pour over sausage but if you are in a hurry this does work.

Per my husband who served 4+ years in service, the cooks used fatty ground beef in this recipe specifically for the laxative effect it created.

I grew up with flavored milk gravy on biscuits or toast several times a week. The gravy was usually flavored with ground beef, pork sausage, cube steak, ham, corned beef, even chicken. Gravy was a favorite with my family for breakfast or supper, and we still enjoy it occasionally. Even my adult daughters will ask for sausage gravy and biscuits several times a year.
