From my sister-in law's recipe collection:

6 tbsp butter

3/4 cup brown sugar

2 tbsp maple syrup

6 1-inch thick slices French bread cut into 3/4-inch cubes

4 eggs

1 cup half and half

1 tbsp vanilla

1/4 tsp salt

Microwave butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup in bowl for 1-2 minutes until sugar is dissolved. Stir to mix. Spread in bottom of 9x13" baking pan sprayed with PAM. Arrange bread cubes in single layer on top.

Whisk eggs, half and half, vanilla, and salt in bowl. Pour over bread. Cover pan and refrigerate overnight.

To cook: Uncover pan and place in cold oven. Set oven to 350 degrees. When oven reaches 350 degrees, bake for 35 minutes. Extra yummy if served with sweetened whipped cream and strawberries.

I make this quite often especially when I have bread I want to use up. My husband and I really enjoy it. Prepare it the night before.

Mix 2/3 cup brown sugar (light or dark) plus 3 Tbls granulated sugar with 2 - 3 tsp cinnamon. Add a handful of raisins (optional). Set aside.

Whisk 5 - 6 eggs with 1 1/2 cups whole milk and 1 tsp vanilla extract.

Melt 1/2 cup butter or margarine in 9 x 13 pan. Layer in 6 slices of white bread (I use scali or Italian bread generally whatever I want to use up - I have even used hot dog rolls to fill in!) Sprinkle with half brown sugar mixture. Finish up with another layer of 6 slices of bread. Pour egg mixture over bread, gently press down. Sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

Bake 350 degrees covered, uncover and continue baking 15 minutes until set and browned. (I take the pan out of fridge while oven is preheating).
