Thanks for the replies...I had read that the tree might be under stress, which might be the case...the tree looks healthy but a few of the large branches have died, there is not a lot left of the tree.

I do not recall what kind of tree it is. it was planted many years ago.

I have a tree that has sprouts popping up all over the landscape bed...I cannot conrol them, I just have to continually trim the sprouts off...they are attached to the roots I believe, you can not pull them out, they must be cut.

Is there a product that actually work to stop this from happening?

If there is a word for this issue, please let me know..possibly I could do a better internet search.

thanks

Silly me, I tried to kill the sprouts with a product that said it was safe for the tree. Nope. It damaged my tree. It took 2 years to see improvement. So now, I just cut them.

Just an FYI-if you have excessive sprouting it could be a sign that your tree is under a lot of stress. Nature is trying to preserve the life of the tree by sending up shoots for new life. If you have an arborist you might want to have them check the tree if you wish to save it.

Try doing a sear for 'tree root suckers'. Our master gardener class just had a session on "Are you a sucker enabler". LOL!!!

I use Sucker Punch. Sometimes it works, sometimes I'm not too sure. If a plant is prone to suckers, it's still going to put them out, so you might kill that one, but it'll put out another one. Mostly, I use it on the Crepe Myrtle and sometimes the Hollies since I have them trained as trees. You paint the stuff on the cut end after you remove the sucker, so if you're getting a lot of them, it could get a bit onerous.
