We don't like bark because over time it turns a weathered gray color and the sun can bleach them out so after a period of time I think it actually looks bad.

I love the color of the river rocks, they never fade or look dirty. I put them in my atrium with plants and boxwoods. I like the bark nuggets in some areas that aren't exposed to a lot of sun.

Our back and front yard is totally rock. Most houses in Arizona landscape in rocks because of water shortages and to be honest who wants to do yard work when it's 110 degrees outside? Wouldn't have it any other way. No maintenance.

Most yards in AZ, including mine, are comprised of rock. Many HOAs don't allow real grass due to being in the desert & needing to maintain water conservation.

The rocks last & wear just fine. You do have to add more over time as they roll away in wind, storms, etc. .

At our house, we have a combination of mulch bark and various types of rocks. Keeping up with mowing grass on uneven front yard and slope/hillside on the sides and back was out of the question from the git-go. Fortunately, ferns grow like crazy here.

We refresh the mulch bark every other year up to 2-3 inches. And, at the street front we a variety of 1-man and 2-man rocks arranged in a particular color and various shapes. The others are smaller rocks that I can lift, and were hand picked and grouped by type and color. It was a great project that we took our time to arrange and add to if we see something of interest.

No maintenance with the rocks, lots of visual interest and they make the yard unique. Have fun and enjoy the journey!
