I can only tell our story. MANY years ago during a trip to Florida, my young son, wanted to buy a lime "tree". It was about a 8 inch twig. But we bought it - typical tourist.

Planted in a nice planter and it grew. Every few years put it in a larger planter. It kept growing. Would take it outside for the summer and it would take off and grow. Brought it in for the winter (we live in Pennsylvania) and it lost many of its leaves. We would think it would die. Until the next summer and it would become a nice full bush when we would put it outside.

About 3 years ago we got 52 smallish limes. and made 3 lime pies for Thanksgiving.

It flowers every once in awhile but it will only produce limes when it flowers during the months that it is outside. Needs the bugs to do their job. But it does flower quite a bit while it is in the house.

The color of the limes are not the nice green that you would buy in the store. It is a light green with maybe a little yellow.

We had no idea what we were doing. Followed the initial directions that came with "the twig". Mother Nature did the rest.

Just so you know. It is still like a bush not a tree. I think because we have it in a planter. So we can bring it inside for the winter. And the limes are small. Not grocery store size. More like ping pong ball size. BUT we grew them ourselves.

And I swear the pies tasted extra good. It was the only "home grown" item on the Thanksgiving menu. And glad we were able to make 3 pies. There were 14 people at the dinner.

Meyer Lemon trees that do not experience any cold weather, fail to break down the chlorophyll in the peel. The break down of chlorophyll releases carotenoids which in turn, make the peel yellow. So they stay green even though they may be perfectly ripe! Also, if you try a green one, just remember that it may take 6 to 18 months for those lemons to actually mature inside and taste good. In the Spring, put it outside surrounded by flowerrs that attract LOTS of pollinators. Give it a good feeding in the Spring, but not in the Fall. The leaves falling off is most likely due to the decrease in sunlight it experiences, when you bring it inside. Good luck!
