Putting started plants outside.

I made a makeshift green house outside on out big picnic table and all of the flower and veggie seeds I started are now outside under the greenhouse plastic and I transplanted some of the plants already that were in need of more growing space. I started them on march 20th. I will probably start planting around may 20th. I bought some plant cages for the broccoli and cabbage plants rabbits kept eating last year. Good luck gardening everyone.

It's quite a dance, isn't it! I have tomatoes and basil started inside the last week of March. DH put out our pots on the patio today, but I won't be planting for another 2 weeks at least. I would think the broccoli and cabbage could go out before the more tender veggies. They are cold weather plants and love it - as long as they are hardened off. We don't have rabbits anymore, but we have deer and raccoons. The plant cages sound like a good idea.

I did something similar with my tomatoes-started them indoors in late March, then left them out a few hours each day for about a week before planting around mid-May. Those cages will help a ton, but you can also lay some chicken wire around the base to keep rabbits away

Hate the weather this time of year! Yesterday it was 76 today the high is 46 . . . we picked up some perrenials, that I want to get in the ground next week . . .

How fun! Sounds like you have made a good start. Think I will get some annuals next week for color. I have so many trees that sunlight is always an issue.

Sounds like a great plan! If you begin to have bugs eating your broccoli and or cabbage plants, you could use Sevin dust on them, (unless you do not want any type of chemicals). We have used it for years, usually put it on in the evening and it will stay put until it rains. It does work very well and is reasonably priced, I get mine at Walmart. Good luck! Two of my all time favorite veggies, broccoli and cabbage.

I planted my summer garden on Saturday morning during a drizzling rain. I had already prepared my square foot garden boxes by adding steer manure and raised garden organic soil. I don't use pesticides in my garden.I planted seedlings I got from various places. Tomatoes: Early Girl, Kellogg Breakfast, Red Brandywine and Sungold. I have tall cages for my tomatoes.. The other box has Basil, Shiseto pepper, lemon cucumber, zucchini and yellow squash. Here in the Sacramento valley, we are expecting temperatures from the low 70s to the low 80s this week.

Way too early to plant flowers or vegetables in WV; my parents tried to plant potatoes close to Memorial Day weekend, depending on the signs, per the almanac. It was 41 at 5 a.m. this morning and we will still see frost and freeze warnings thru May.

You'll need to keep an eye on the temp in the "greenhouse". On a sunny day, it can heat up under that plastic. And you don't want the plastic touching the plants if it gets hot like that.

I have to do the cage thing with my emerging hostas due to rabbits. I plant some little pills against the roots that makes them really bitter, but it takes time for it to take effect. last month I did a lot of musical cages as things grew, moving smaller cages to newer plants and putting larger cages over the larger ones. Of course, you can't do the bitter pill thing with your food crops.

Forgot to mention, for smaller plants you can fashion a greenhouse out of an old plastic milk carton, the transluscent ones. Holds the heat in and you can remove the lid for a little ventilation or remove the carton during the day and then replace it at night to protect from frost. Since it's not clear, it'll also not heat up as quickly.
