Amaryllis

Just sharing that my Amaryllis bloomed! It's my first one to bloom in all the years I've tried to have one do so.

Now, I don't know what to do with the bulb after the blooms wilt.

I get so tired of people repsonding "Google is your friend"

It's just as annoying as that cell phone commerical where they say "can you hear me now?"

But it's true. Why encourage dependance? GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND. True statement.

I agree that many people do not like to do research and learn about things. I am the exact opposite, which can be stressful, because I like to do everything well!

My amaryllis bulb is about ten years old, and it blooms almost every year. Even if the flower wilts, the stalk is still there and alive. I water all my house plants every week.

Amaryllis is the only bulb I do not transplant to my backyard garden, as it is more fragile in extreme cold.

My Amaryllis bloomed in late December and is now putting out two new bloom stalks. I heard that they can rebloom several times.

So, keep yours out and keep taking care of it to see if you can get new blooms out of it. After that, you can either throw it away or save it for next year. You will definitely need to do research on that because I know keeping bulbs can be challenging.

For years I had an amaryllis bulb and got it to bloom every year with several flower stalks.

If your post is current and the wilted flowers are still on the stalk, snip off the dead flowers and allow the plant to absorb back whatever the stalk still has. I used to roll the drying stalk down to its base and then snip it when totally dry. Impatient: just snip it off at the base.

Keep the planted bulb in a sunny window and water when needed. When the weather gets warm, transfer it to fresh soil and a larger pot and place outside with your spring / summer flowers. Come late September, stop watering and turn the pot on its side. Before cold weather strikes, snip all the blades and take the bulb out. Trim the roots to about 2-3" and keep in a dry dark area.

About 5-6 weeks before you want flowers: plant the bulb in fresh soil up to its shoulders and water. Place in a sunny window and wait. You should see s a little green peeking out in about 2 weeks. It will then grow fast.

I received my first Amaryllis this Christmas from a friend and was so excited when I had four blooms in different stages. Then last weekend I went to dust the table it was on and there was all this pollen on the table from the blooms. I read up on Amaryllis after seeing the yellow and it said they do self-pollinate.

I had to give it away my allergies are so bad I had to do shots for years. It was beautiful while it lasted.

@jlkz Thank You! I have to say NOTHING I have seen on Google was a helpful as what you wote.

Knowing nothing about Amaryllis There were some big box store that was selling those bulb and pot kits. Well those poor bulbs were half grown out twisted around and stark white in those boxes. They gave it to me for free.

Well, I potted the thing and after several weeks it greened up some short little leaves and bloomed. I thought it was done. "A Job well done little bulb and goodbye"...BUT it started sending up leaves from a different spot on the bulb. It's Still Alive! I just Can't throw it away now!

It's just gonna have to take it's chances with me but at least now I have a clue what to do with it.

I have used Google only once in my life. It is not secure and it is nobody's business when and what I search for.
