WINE BERRIES 😃

Last year, my dad brought home the start of an interesting berry bush. They were growing wild on some property out in the hollow. He always thought they were a form of wild raspberry and was actually right!

They are called Wine Berries and are native only to Asia, but were brought here in hopes of creating a hybrid raspberry. Soon after, they escaped cultivation and began to grow in some parts.

They taste a lot like a raspberry, only smaller and a little more tart. I've captured pictures from the beginning of the berries forming until now. It's really surprising to see how they start out. Instead of forming from a flower, they begin as a husk and pop out from inside.😃

I really like these too. Dad isn't crazy about these berries because they are a bit thorny. I think he just regrets us putting them so close to the grape vines and he's afraid they'll try and take over.

I don't want to get rid of them. Hopefully, we can compromise and just move them.😃

@cheriere : Very timely post. Just heard of these yesterday when DS texted me that they are his new favorite snack. Growing wild around his home. I will share your pics with him.

I'm so glad I posted these today. Tell DS to get you a start to these berries. They are hard to kill lol. Plus, they grow really fast. I was surprised we had them this year.

I think those are so pretty.

My daughter had one in a house she rented and I always thought I would like one at every house I stayed at!

Do you have a picture of your dad's grape vines?

Those look yummy. Do you make wine with any of the berries?

DH made some wine with frozen grape juice, peach juice & another one I don't remember what it was. He used the peach wine when he cooked pork on the grill or smoker.

He used to make beer, Hasn't done that in a while.

Yes, I do have pictures of the grape vines. We have three different big areas for grapes here and two at the old house in the hollow. I started taking the pics just as they were starting to grow this year because it's really cool to see the inside of how they start.

Here's where they are right now. I'll post more as they start to ripen.😃❤️

No, we've never made wine with any of these berries, but I'd love to try. In the past, we have made wine from our grapes and apples. That's very clever to think of peach wine. I've never tried that either, but you're giving me some great ideas. We eat a lot of pork too, so I'll bet it's great! Thank you for posting about this.😃❤️

Been making wine berry pies for years with Tapioca as thickner , raw sugar & allspice .

Thank you so much for letting me know what I can make with them. My regular raspberries are nearly gone, but these are just coming in. I've never made anything with them. Your recipe sounds delicious!😃❤️

where I live these berries are prevalent. I have many of the wild wine berry vines surrounding my yard.

I've seen some people picking the berries that grow alongside the secondary roads , however I've also seen the trucks spraying weed killer on vegetation along the same areas along the road . I'd be careful where you pick.

You're so right about being careful of those sprayed. These berries are prevalent at the house I grew up in and at my grandparents old place. That's where my dad brought the start of these from.😃❤️
