@Lilysmom1

No. I used to put fiberglass window screening over the top to keep out mosquitos and debris, but I don't any longer. I keep tropical fish and mosquito larvae are great fish food, so if I notice mosquito larvae, I just take a fine net and scoop them out to feed my fish. As for debris, I use the Oatey 14209 downspout diverters that let leaves and trash go down the downspout while diverting the water to the rain barrels. They work well. You have to clean them out each spring, but it takes maybe five minutes to clean them.

You can get an impressive amount of water in a short rainstorm from a roof. It takes just a quarter to a half inch of rain to fill my rain barrels. Rain water is better for the plants also. Chlorinated water has chlorine in it to kill microorganisms. Microorganisms in the soil mostly help plants. Why harm them if you don't have to?Some plants, insect eating plants for one example, hate chlorinated/treated water.

Here in the southern states (GA), we don't do that.

We have a lot of mosquitoes which lead to heartworm disease, something that we pay for to prevent, and it's not cheap!

The treatment to our pets for heartworm is even worse....they can only treat it with arsenic, very hard on the pet and VERY expensive.

We remove any standing water immediately, even after a heavy rain.....

So true about how times and everything have changed. Rain barrels sounds like a simple solution but so many things to consider.

For the past number of years our Sam's Club would sell containers to catch rain water. They had a faucet built into the container so you could drain the water into buckets or use a hose.

I did not see them this year but must admit I wasn't looking for them. I always thought it was such a good idea. My brother used to collect rain water for his garden. They were in a rural area and relied on well water. And sometimes in summer their well would run low.

How much rain can you catch in a pot or pan? This collects a sufficient amount to use.
