After Dorian ...

The dust has settled. We are installing a new roof in the Spring after damage from Dorian. Below are photos of some of the damage and some fall garden shots. Amazing we have any blooms at all after the record breaking winds.

This medium sized maple split in two. We cleaned up the downed part and will probably have to remove the entire tree as it is across from the garage doors and next to the power lines to the house.

The largest Honeycrisp keeled over with the burden of full fruit and leaves. We will harvest the apples and try to get it upright again. All other apples have been damaged but not to this extent and are repaired.

Remember the stairs? The trees are so big they extend from the rock wall on the main property down to the road to the lake.

My favorite Vanilla Strawberry hydrangea strutting it’s stuff post Dorian. Amazing the flowers survived the high winds.

It's a shame you lost so many mature trees but overall things look pretty good. How did your Japanese Maple fare? Your flowers survived amazingly well.

You have been working hard and your gardens look beautiful! I’m so sorry about the loss of trees, sad about the Apple trees.

@Kachina624 , I was sitting in the living room and watched the largest tree fall without a sound, or the sound was masked by the high wind. Turns out it’s trunk was on top of a huge granite rock. I knew we would lose that one.

The old old oak trees are truly amazing. They survive storm after storm. While I hate the Fall clean up of leaves, they really are majestic. LM

@1Snickers , we cleaned up most of the gardens early because we have a big community beautification project to finish before the freezing temps set in. Hope we don’t have another storm for awhile.

We are waiting for quotes on tree removal. LM

@AuntG , I think we will still get apples so I can stockpile some pies for the freezer. DH will replace the big one if we can’t salvage it. He loves the Apple trees. LM

@LilysmomIt looks like that maple tree is kaput (too much bark off the trunk lost)

You can right the apple tree but it will need some cabling and a rubber hose with stakes to keep it upright. It should be staked for an entire year but with some give so that the tree can rock slightly.

The rocking movement with regular breezes and wind will help with root formation. Make sure the roots on the rootball are teased outward and not circling the rootball (to prevent girdling) when you go to replant it back.
