@Desertdi. They've been saying after it gets to the Carolinas, its supposed to turn east and go out to sea. Wouldn't something like that be a disaster in @Lilysmom 's garden? Probably the sea water is too cold that far north to sustain a hurricane.

@Kachina624 I've seen some weather reports that it might hit Canada as a Nor-easter........ We've had the dregs of Pacific typhoons coming up thru Mexico that hit PHX with "100-year floods". I'm getting so old, that nothing surprises me any more (!!) di

@Kachina624 @Desertdi , see below for our experience with hurricanes. What I remember most vividly about Juan was the oppressive heat and silence when it was over.

What I remember most about White Juan was backhoes being used to remove snow from driveways. Snow blowers were useless and there were many plows with burnt out engines. One of the big issues was where to put the snow. A lot of it ended up in the harbour. Special permission granted for disposal by the City. See photo at the bottom.

When we built our retirement home, we made sure there was a wood stove and propane stove. During construction, one of the crew who lived south for awhile said there was more rebar in our house than those he built in hurricane zones. Those are the lasting impressions from these storms.

Not the norm for us but known to happen. Subsequent large storms that have not reached hurricane status are known locally as ‘Juan-abies‘.

Forecasters are calling for high winds, heavy rain and storm surge Saturday. My brother is building a new house so the drive is to get it roof tight by the weekend.

Sea temperatures are rising here so the likelihood of these storms coming further north over time also rises.

HURRICANE JUAN

It has been 14 years since Hurricane Juan made landfall in Halifax, N.S. and while much of the damage has been repaired, if you look close enough the fallout can still be seen — and felt — throughout the region.

Scientists have called it a once-in-a-50-year storm and the most “damaging storm in modern history of Halifax,” with approximately 100-million trees being uprooted, broken or tossed around.

The Category 2 hurricane that made landfall shortly after 12:00 a.m on Sept. 29, 2003, brought with it sustained winds of 157 km/h, sheeting rain, storm surges and huge waves.

Trees were uprooted, cars pinned beneath the weight of heavy, mature trees that seemed immovable. Shingles blew across empty city streets.

The Halifax Regional Municipality was one of that hardest hit regions in the storm’s path.

Streets were blocked off, sometimes for days, as trees were uprooted or power lines knocked over.

Boardwalks were torn up by surf and heavy winds while roofs on houses were damaged.

A unique storm

Although the Atlantic Provinces are no stranger to the effects of hurricanes and subtropical storms, it’s unusual for a hurricane of this strength to travel to the northern reaches of the Atlantic Ocean.

The reason has to do with the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Hurricanes are fed from the surface temperature of the ocean. Usually, the cooler Atlantic waters force a hurricane to weaken the further north it travels.

But in 2003, the waters of the Atlantic were unusually warm, about 3 C warmer than average.

This made Juan incredibly powerful for a storm in the North Atlantic. Not only did the warmer waters contribute to Juan, the hurricane didn’t slow down as it progressed north. Juan actually sped up and accelerated — causing the storm to hit Halifax with an unusually strong combination of intense wind, rain and surf.

Aftermath

According to a report by Chris Fogarty of the Canadian Hurricane Centre, between 800,000 and 900,000 people lost their power during the storm.

“The Nova Scotia Power Corporation reported that the last of their affected customers had power restored by the morning of Sunday, Oct. 12 — just short of two weeks after the storm,’ Fogarty wrote.

Estimates pegged the damage at $300 million.

WHITE JUAN

Tuesday, February 18, 2014, 11:53 AM -

Between February 18 and 19, 2004, just five months after Hurricane Juan, Canada's east coast was hit by a strong Nor'easter nicknamed "White Juan."

The blizzard dumped huge amounts of snow across the Atlantic provinces. Wind gusts of up to 120 km/h were recorded in some locations and snowfall totals in some areas were almost a metre high.

A province-wide state of emergency was declared in Nova Scotia

Halifax imposed traffic curfews in the days following the storm to help with the massive clean up.

The federal government just recently announced a final payment of $3.6 million has been made to the province of Nova Scotia to help with costs incurred during White Juan.

Although the storm happened back in 2004, the repayment is all part of the disaster financial assistance arrangements program.

The program was put in place back in 1970 to help individual provinces following natural disasters.

The severity of White Juan made it the first and only winter storm for which Nova Scotia required this type of assistance.

"We've only had one white Juan or one blizzard claim for snow so it’s very rare to have a claim like this," says Paul MacNeil with Nova Scotia EMO. "We've never done one since then, but it was a major snowfall in Nova Scotia. I mean there was 95 centimetres of snow that fell in the province. There was high winds causing huge amount of drifts and the city was closed down for approximately three days while the snow was removed from the city."

A total of 18 municipalities were impacted by the blizzard.

@Desertdi , bless you! I am going to start taking down some garden items today. It is time. I just read it could be category 1 on landfall here. We are on high ground. Once we start getting these warnings, Ibegin the Fall shutdown routine. Landfall expected Sat. LM

@Desertdi , it took DH and I three days to shovel out the driveway. We were smart and parked the car at the bottom. We were depositing snow in banks well over our heads. It was quite an experience. LM

@Lilysmom I lived in Chicago during the "Blizzard of '67" which STOPPED ALL ACTIVITY in the city. (A "first" for us tough Midwesterners.) 27 inches overnight. One side of our house was drifted over with heavy wet snow. (Nothing as bad as your White Juan, tho.)

I vowed to get out of there, and was transferred by my company to Los Angeles in late 1970.....and 3 months later, we had the 6.7 Northridge Earthquake. You can't outrun Mother Nature. Now, I'm sitting in the Sonoran Desert......with my fingers crossed(!)

@Desertdi , that is quite a story. It is not uncommon after a hard winter to see sun vacations skyrocket from this part of the country.

During my career, I made a business trip to Alaska. They shut down the entire community for a month and head to Hawaii. Now that’s a plan! I have to tell you though, the day I left for Alaska, it was colder in Nova Scotia than it was in Alaska. It was -40C. It was the only time in my life my car wouldn’t start. I flew Halifax-Toronto-Chicago-Anchorage-Kodiak Island. I came home via Seattle to visit scientists at the Seattle University. I loved it there!

Will check in as the storm approaches. Hoping our friends down coast are safe. LM

I fed my roses one final time for the season. If I get a chance tomorrow, I will feed the lawn for it’s final feeding for the year.

That baby rabbit is a mini Houdini.

This afternoon I saw it caught inside some rabbit fencing around Asiatic lilies! It didn’t dig its way under the fencing. I think it accidentally hopped in! I had to free it by lifting one side of the fencing which is held in place with metal landscape stakes.

That is the same rabbit (I posted a photo of it on another thread) that has been in my backyard all summer.

Always something in my yard.

@Lilysmom. Your wild tale makes me glad I live in hurricane-free New Mexico. The biggest weather-related event we have is drought. At my house, we've had 2 showers all summer and it's the monsoon season. It thunders and I smell rain but it's always somewhere else.

@JustJazzmom , they are really talking the storm up now saying a slight veer in path could have a huge impact. I took inside anything I usually do for winter...gazing balls, breakable stuff. I hear it has reintesified and is at South Carolina this morning.

It will reach us Saturday night. Winds at 150 km/hour. Trees leafed out will be like sails. Rainfalls up to 150 mm. We are being told to prepare for extended power outages.

Gas for the chainsaw and generator today, groceries also. Getting ready to hunker down.

@Kachina624 , it is not usually so bad here. With all the talk, I am beginning to feel like this is a bad one though. The risk you run with these advance warnings is complacency if the storm is not as bad as the warnings predict.

There will be the usual risk takers on the rocks at Peggy’s Cove. Last week, a tourist went swimming there. Every year there are drownings there despite the fact that there are 42 warning signs to stay off the black rocks. It is a bad place for first responders. LM

@Desertdi , I heard someone start talking about Hurricane Juan today and comparing Dorian to it. That scared me. We shut down the lakeside today. All the furniture stowed, swing down, small things in the shed.

I hit the grocery store today. Long lineups. DH is getting gas for generator, chainsaw, side by side. I will probably cook tomorrow.

I am most worried about my brother who is building his retirement home. It is not rooftight yet. Say a prayer for him! LM

@Lilysmom ...I'm hoping it goes way out to sea and steers well off land. Good to be prepared, but I really think it will fizzle out. I'm in central Florida on the East coast and thank God we did good. Got some heavy bands of rain and wind, power flickered but stayed on! So strange, 2 days before we got hit, a gust of wind knocked down a tree in my back pasture. We did all like you, gassed up, waters, food, making bottles of ice, batteries and the list goes on. Today, was, put back day😀, all my feeders and lawn decor etc back out. We are sure tired, but most thankful. I think you'll be out DORIAN'S path and it's going AWAY!!! 🙏
