First Peony!

I am excited - we moved last year and I left a garden of beautiful, fragrant peonies. We planted some late last summer at the new house and today I was rewarded with my first blossom! So pleased! Any one else? I am in SE VA btw.

The dandelions have bloomed in my dead front lawn, those flowers are such a pretty cheerful yellow I should pick myself a bouquet! We had peonies at an old farmhouse & they were so lovely, my young sons would pick the first blooms & come running to surprise me. I admire your green thumb, enjoy your peonies.

I just got my first peony bloom of the season. It’s rather exciting, isn’t it! I’m in the Carolinas.

My two bushes started blooming a few days ago. We were expecting thunderstorms last night so I cut myself a small bouquet. So pretty and smells like heaven!

My 8 peonies next to my driveway got dug up & are in process of being repotted now. The 4 Japanese style shaped flowered ones are full of buds; the hybrid ITOH ‘Bartzella’ that got moved from front by driveway (it can get 4’ X 4’ ) has buds forming now! So happy because I was told with late summer early fall transplant it may go back to sleep stage instead of creep stage where it is now. Did a happy dance when I saw the buds!

You probably know this, but there are some interesting recipes for dandelion greens. I made a wilted dandelion dish last year from store-bought dandelions since here they spray the ones that pop up in the lawns with herbicide.

I have one peony plant that I keep meaning to move since it only bloomed the first year and isn't getting enough sun. Gorgeous foliage, though.

@GingerPeach Peonies do best with full sun. Does your area get a cold winter to help the peonies form buds for upcoming year?

@FastDogWalker2 My tree peony has to buds, getting fatter by the day, but it takes so long for them to open, can't wait.

@FastDogWalker2 I would be excited too. I live in an apt. so no peonies for me. Wish I could have one but I wonder if you could plant in a pot and be able to leave it out in the winter (I live in Midwest) so it gets cold. Peonies are so beautiful. I love the light pink and white and then the darker color so I love them all. lol

Containers can freeze if left outside, but if you can dig a hole & put container into the hole in the ground then the container won’t freeze (plant can die in frozen container). It has something to do with the air temperature interfering with the water going through the roots. I guess it’s easier for roots to get water if in the ground versus exposed to the air when in a container above ground.

It's iffy as to cold weather these days, @JustJazzmom I've barely worn a sweater, much less a coat, on consecutive winter days these past years.

You were kind enough to send me a whole sheet on peony care a few years back. I may still have it.

Dandelions are just unappreciated flowers !!!, anyway that's what my girlfriend always tells me when I complain about them.

It is funny you brought up peonies. Yesterday we were looking at azalea, rhododendron and other flowering bushes.

And my husband was saying he wants more peony bushes. We have one. It was not much more than a stick when I bought it. Now it is a big beautiful bush. But the buds are still tightly closed. We will need some warm weather before they open.

I am glad to hear that your transplanted peonies are blooming. And that you had the foresight to take some with you.
