Repotting African violets

My African violets love living on my north-facing kitchen window sill but always got leggy until a few years ago when I discovered the violetbarn dot com site with instructions on repotting these plants to manage the leggy portion.

Now they look full and lush but I do need to remember to give them more light (move them to another window) so they will create more blooms.

Who else enjoys growing these plants?

I used to grow them until my life got busier. I gave them all away along with the pretty pots.

I only have luck growing African violets for some reason I repot when they look too big for pot. Your supposed to water from the bottom, but I never do, and mine grow quite big and always have blooms. I think the key to violets is the window you put them in. I have one plant that 25 years old. (Sometimes you can split them as well). Good luck. P.s. I do feed them occasionally with African violet food from miracle grow)

My late mom had many many African violets. They are hard not to love, aren't they!

She had many different kinds, she took the leaves and made new ones. She had all sizes and colors.

I have a black thumb. I have a few plants, gifts. I've managed to keep most of them alive but generally I feel like a serial killer when it comes to plants.

I'm growing a blackberry vine outside and a fig tree. I'm also going to try tomatoes and lettuce this summer. It's an experiment.

Your African violets are beautiful,, I know they bring you much enjoyment. I love shopping around for unique containers, too

@GingerPeach. If your plants got leggy in a North window, it seems to me they were NOT happy but were telling you they needed stronger light. They were reaching for more.

According to violetbarn, all African violets eventually get leggy and "should" be repotted every 6 months. I've never had to repot them even close to that often. I'm pretty sure they're reasonably happy in the north window during the hottest part of the year and like the east window during the days when temps are not in the 90s and above.

I'm going to keep on taking their (my violets') word for it!

I love AVs! I have three in a filtered south facing bay window. My favorite is one with variegated (green and white) leaves. I fertilize with fish emulsion and Jack's Classic. Two are in AV pots, one in a standard clay. They bloom often.

My mom grew African Violets. They were really pretty & had flowers on them. I could not get them to grow when I bought some. They died on me.

I went through a phase when I loved them but got tired of repotting. It is fun to start them from leaves. I haven’t had one in years. Now I’m enjoyiing succulents. They require less watering and repotting. They bloom but not as pretty as av’s for the most part.

African violets like an east facing window. I have one that is flourishing in an east window.They do not need to be repotted often.

African violets are my favorite houseplants, but my girls have asthma and my husband has COPD, so I cannot have any type of houseplant due to the mold and mildew spores.
