GLB613, our winter has been rough as well. Very cold. What worries me most though are the highly fluctuating temperatures. In the deep freeze one day and heavy rain a couple of days later. Big temperature swings. I have had the frost heaving a couple of my plants which I had to reseat. Hope they survive. Come on spring!!!

I have 8 lavender "Provence" that have been in containers all summer.

Should I put them in the ground, leave in pots, or just discard?

I am in Zone 5B & have a couple of lavender, but mine are in the ground. I don't mulch them & they stand up to the snow quite well.

I'm surprise in Los Angeles you are in Zone 5. I was in Zone 10 when I lived in So Calif.

My lavender doesn't look too good with the frigid temperature and lots of snow. If it doesn't make it, I'll plant something else.

I'll give it a try. We are having such cold weather, I'm concerned about a lot of my plants.

Do not give up yet. I have had many plants surprise me, even in containers. I would tidy them up a little, make sure they get the winter sun. If it is too dry in your area water them, as when temperatures dip, plants that are dry suffer. Water insulates. If it is pretty wet where you are, make sure the pots are draining. I say don't give up until Spring has arrived. You may see some greening at the base and give them a chance to come around.

I planted my lavender in the ground. I mixed in a good amount of pea gravel and sand to make sure they did not get too wet. They seem to be quite happy. I am in upper zone 6.

Good luck!

I'm also in a snow belt area off the Lake Erie so we can get some brutal snow.

I've never had problem with the lavender. Some of my plants are over 15 years old!

I think I am in zone 5 and most years my lavender survives and sometimes not. I have a feeling that with all of the below zero temps this year, it won't survive.
