The texture balm is one WEN product I have never used, since I have relatively long, straight hair, and I've always figured that it was mostly for short hair. However, I am seriously thinking of getting a very short haircut, a pixie style, as I am going to be retiring in less than a year, and shorter hair means less WEN needed, so hopefully I will be able to keep affording WEN even with a reduced income. However, I have really straight, fine hair, and usually when it's short it clings to my scalp like a mushroom cap, or, to borrow a phrase from another hair product vendor on the Q, it's "cat hair". I'm not sure that the WEN mousse will do enough to give my hair some lift and body, and am wondering if the texture balm would be the product to try. Thanks in advance for any info anyone who has used this product can share!

hi! I have had the Texture Twist for a while now and I have short hair that is fine and limp. I find that a volumizing mousse works very well to add volume and a pomade like Texture Twist helps with making it look "piecey". However, TT doesn't add any shine. I am thinking you might want to try the Calista products. The one that you clap your hands together to work it. In fact, I am going to go find it and order some more for me. Lol By the way I just retired too.

Hi Camille, the texture balm was one of Chaz's first products, but it doesn't get talked about much. I know there are some Wenners who swear by it. I've never used it because when I asked Wen customer service about it, they said it worked best on thick/coarse hair (and my hair is baby fine).

Here are a few threads I found in the Wen 101 thread (page 2, message #19) which might be helpful: Texture Balm and Texture balm???? .

I do use Wen 613 mousse for my thin/fine, shoulder length hair and it really helps. -- The 613 mousse is the only product I have ever used which gave my limp hair some body without being sticky. For my second and third day hair, while I lose some of the va-va-voom factor, my hair still has more overall body from having used the mousse on the first day. -- I use the 613 mousse because it has the most concentrated amount of amino acids in it. It also has a shine ingredient that is not in most of the other mousses (though it may be in BGT & MIF, I'm just not sure).

Best of luck!!

-- bebe Wen FAQ - Wen 101 - Wen Quick Links - Wen News - periscope - QVC WEN forum - August Chat 2015 - Wen Abbreviations Glossary

Thanks, everyone, it sounds like I might want to stick with the mousse and hope that does the job. Candys Mine, you have a good point about needing more frequent haircuts, which might well eat up the savings on WEN from shorter hair. I have been thinking about that, and haven't come to a firm decision yet. I guess I am just thinking that, at 58+, I might need to consider a different hairstyle than the one I wore when I was in high school. However, every time I do get a short haircut, it looks awful, and I have to deal with looking awful until I can get it grown out again. WEN has made a huge difference in my hair, but it can't change the shape of my face and head, and I may just need to resign myself to long hair for the rest of my life if I don't want to look like a mushroom with eyes and a nose.

Camille, if your hair still looks nice and you know how to style it then enjoy it! My mom is 69 and still has lovely shoulder length hair. It is fine and the style is simple, which suits her and doesn't require tons of styling. I don't think age, even with retirement, has to mean anything about your stylel! Another money saving approach might be to try to push your wash day back a day. So, if you are an every other day washer, maybe try every third day instead since you won't be going to work every day.

Just to be clear, I love a pixie! I kept my hair pixie short for years because of the style. Personally, I found it to be less time, but just as much effort because I care about hair. After my many hair lengths I just accepted that I am someone who is going to focus on her hair because I love it. I did have to use harder core products to make it look interesting because my hair is fine. I had a great stylist, so I only went to the salon about 4 times a year with mine because it could grow a bit longer without looking a mess. However, I had to have some thickening paste and a small flat iron for ends and some other things to keep it sharp. If you are a wash and go person it might be less time and money, but again for me it was just different.

Edited to add: having touched the texture balm and tried it on my ends, there is no way that would have worked for me with shorter hair. I'd have been greases pieces.

Yisbuff, that phrase is priceless, "greases pieces"! LOL! Yes, I will definitely stick with the mousse if I do decide to go short. I could easily wash less often if I wasn't working, but until then, I need to wash every day, as I work in a laboratory, and I don't want to leave what I pick up in the lab every day on my hair or skin any longer than I have to, let alone sleep with it. Thanks for weighing in!

Thank you, Candys Mine. I could go with a short bob, but I actually need my hair to be long enough to pull back in a banana clip, as I work with Fisher gas burners (think "Bunsen burner on steroids) all the time, and my hair has to stay out of my face and not be vulnerable to getting lit on fire, so it has to be controlled by either a pony tail or clip. So a chin-length bob, which would probably be flattering and fashionable, isn't practical. Now in a year, if the bob hairstyle is still in, it might be the perfect change for me. I think, since I am hankering for a change right now, that color is the way to go. I have dark ashy blonde hair (I am actually a calico, I have black, platinum blond, brown, red and grey hairs in there) and green eyes, so auburn looks really good on me, and now that I use WEN, it will last and look beautiful instead of washing away in 4-6 weeks.

I used to use the texture balm and really liked it, especially when I was growing out my hair. However, with my new, shorter style I don't need it. I have naturally wavy/curly hair and use the finishing treatment cream instead of the texture balm. My curls seem to like it better. One good thing about the texture balm is you only need a little bit so it lasts forever. Mine is 2 1/2 years old and I haven't even gone through half to it.

Camille, it sounds like your job is really cool! It is definitely wise to wash of lab residue! Haha. I'm a prof, and there are days when you are in classroom spaces that just feel like a cave of ick so I just have to wash it all. One of the joys of being a Wenner is that I no longer worry about overwashing my hair!

Having some time to play with possiblities when you retire will be fun!

I use the texture balm a lot, but not necessarily on my hair! The first tube I got lasted forever because I mainly used it as a hand moisturizer before I headed out the door! Its great for heels, feet (especially with socks,) elbows, lips, and cuticles and hand moisturizing and reminds me a lot of the "bee wax hand lotions" that used to be sold here in tubes and twist sticks... what was that line called?! Someone here will know. So it dries matte, and protects my hands.

But I always "pieced out" the end layers of my shoulder length hair and also smoothed this one area on my bangs that were determined to go the wrong way once it was all over my hands and rubbed (mostly) in. And LOVED using it for that especially on 'first day' hair. Its a great product. I just didn't need it for the second or third days. Only first day hair. So second and third days were/are "hands and elbows and arms only" days.

Try getting a little 'lip balm' size of it from ebay if you want. See if you like it. They used to be in all those TV kits. If you like it and you find yourself using that up, then you know!

(I use it a little less now because if I use a soy based cleanser, it is heavy enough to not need this to piece it out.)

Here's an idea: Do you have any natural bees wax OR paffafin based lip balms hanging around? Try a rubbing a little into the pads of your fingers and play around with the ends of your hair. See what you think! But remember, you don't have to buy EVERYTHING in a line, just what works for you.

I think the brand you are referring to is the Surgeon's Skin Secret brand.

When I first started watching QVC in the early 2000s, they would have segments on that brand. It had originally been created by a plastic surgeon in the 1950s for his patients for healing after plastic surgery. His core products are 50% beeswax which is permeable (i.e. it lets the skin breathe) but it also holds moisture in. I was really intrigued by the line but I didn't purchase it since it used mineral oil.

On air, they used to put a piece of muslin in a circular embriodery holder. They would put Surgeon's Secret in the center of the muslin and then dump the cloth in a bowl of red juice. the area around the Surgeon's Secret would be red, but the Surgeon's Secret area remained white. -- These days, while QVC still sells it in their online store, it doesn't get any more presentations. Presentations are now for the more expensive, "Name" recognition products.

lol, I've noticed that Josie Maran does the exact same presentation for her balm.

-- bebe

I use the Texture Balm on my bangs. One tube will last you a lifetime. I have been using WEN for quite a few years and I am only on my second tube and the first one is still kicking, I just keep it in my bag that I take to the salon.

As mentioned above, if you are curious and want to try it, Guthy Renker makes a baby Texture Balm and you can buy it on eBay for about $9 with S&H. II use that one for travel.

Because I have curly hair, if it's really humid, I will use the Defining Paste or the Finishing Cream on my bangs. Those seem to work better in humidity.

Since the Finishing Cream is very light, that might be a better option for short, fine pixie cuts.

YEEEESSSS! Thank you!

I liked that brand since I used to work at a job where I washed my hands a lot, and that really helped with keeping my skin protected for a while. I used to also use a product called 'liquid gloves' or something close to that. And now that you mention it, he used to also sell his hand cream in a twist up tube I used to use that too!! No wonder I'm so addicted to the WEN balm!! It all makes sense...

would the texture balm be good for short spikey hair? My son just got a new short hair cut and the stylist used a pomade to spike up the front and it looked really cute. I thought the texture balm would be good for this type of style. What do you think?
