I've tried Tea Tree Oil and agree, I can't tolerate the odor. I invested a lot of money in WEN products (starting about May 2014) and have most of the scents. Most I can't tolerate. Maybe I'm ultra sensitive, but anything with the Menthol I couldn't deal with at all (made my eyes water and my DH think I had used Vicks Vapor rub).... the one I actually enjoyed (scent wise) was the Orange Blossom.

I really do think the smells are very personal as is the sensitivity to them..... and as far as I was concerned, I couldn't "get over" some of them at all.

BTW, I really wanted WEN to work for me... unfortunately it just didn't....

I decided to take my Home and Away set of TT oil for a spin last night. This was my first time ever trying it. I have read lots of rave reviews and was aware it may be loud from some other posts/reviews. I applied it several hours prior to bed hoping the smell would fade a little. I had the worst nights sleep ever. The smell was just so overwhelming and it smelled as if I had doused my hair in pine-sol. I purchased this for the benefits and don't want to give up after one use, but I don't think I will be able to do overnight treatments again. How do you experienced Wenners out there use your TT oil?

Overnight is always how I use it. I find that with any oil I get used to the smell overnight and my brain tunes it out....if that makes any sense. TT smells strong no matter what product it is, I think with that one in particular its just a matter of getting accustomed to it. I don't find it offensive any more, but I definitely didn't care for it at first.

I find that I got used to it after a while. It doesn't smell as strong to me now. Also, I wonder if the scent is not as powerful after the bottle has been open for a while?

If you just can't get past it, you could try mixing it with another oil to dilute the scent. I have mixed mine with WWC in the past and I could still smell the TT, but it wasn't nearly as strong.

If you want to try mixing it, I would do a small test run in a separate bottle, just in case.

I have asthma so I can't do the oils overnight. I put the oil on in the morning of a day that I'm going to be home and wash it out later in the day. I agree that the TT oil is very strong and not that pleasant, so I also add one the seasonal oils or the POM oil to dilute the scent.
As for the menthol in the core CCs, I wish it would be removed or at least be reduced. That's one reason I love the seasonals so much, it's not as noticeable in those formulations.

I was the same. One overnight and it was my last. I finished up my tea tree oil by using it on wet hair when I did the SC to mask most of it or occassionally for my dry ends. Or I did a treatment right before washing while I was cleaning up the house on a weekend. When I couldn't stand it anymore, I jumped in the bath. Luckily I only had a small bottle to get rid of.

I just opened a bottle of FGP CC from my TSV this week and had the same reaction to the spice. I am now trying to get through it although I find it is getting less strong or I just know what to expect. I use something different for my leave in though.

I will say in TT's favor though, as soon as winter hit, I pulled out the TT CC I had put away and was very grateful for it. It took my itchy scalp right away. Good stuff for when you have an issue but it will be in my stash very sparingly.

I use to use straight pure TT oil to cure my infected fingers (I'm a bartender). I hated the smell. Very medicinal. I watched Chaz and Lisa R and thought "what the heck, I'll give it a try". It took a month of using the TT CC and TT Oil before I was desensitized to it. Now, I really enjoy the smell of the oil, I smell a lot more of the eucalyptus. The benefits out way the smell to me. I use a drop on my nails to strengthen them, then I take my hands to my nose and inhale, it clears my sinuses. Lately, I use 3 dropper fulls of TT oil and 1 dropper full of a seasonal, just to smell the seasonal oil all night. Good luck and give it a month, see how ya feel then!

I agree that the TT oil has a very strong scent. I always apply it two or three hours before I go to bed and by then the smell doesn't seem as bad. Maybe you could try using less oil on your scalp or maybe just put it on for a few hours in the daytime (or at night and then cleanse before you go to bed)?

TT has become a scent that I can easily tolerate with time. Not nesessarily enjoy, but tolerate okay. It is an excellent scalp treatment.

Just like Drythe said - wear a cap. I can't stand wearing a plastic cap, does not matter how thin. I may wear plastic cap for a little while before I go to bed, and then I pull on a wool binney hat, or rap a natural fabric scarf around my head.

It works great for me in a way of cutting down the scent a lot. I also believe that warms also helps the treatment work better.

Last night I followed what Bebe said - I put 613 on my dry hair. After that, I put TT oil on the scalp. Twisted my hair very tight for 613 and oil to penetrate, pinned it up, and wore a scarf over night.

I was very surprised to notice how good 613/TT smelled combined together! All night I was kind of really enjoying it! I do wake up a few times anyways regardles whether I have stuff in my hair or not.

After reading all of the comments above, I would suggest that you:

1. Lobby Chaz remove Tea Tree Oil from his products and offer it "on the side" (as with salad dressing) in order that it can be added to the product in the amount of your preference. If the odor is lingering and so offensive to many of you, he is probably adding more of it than is necessary.

2. Request samples before you purchase a larger quantity of Wen products as many of you are spending a great deal of money for products that you use only once or so.

Tea Tree Oil can be added to shampoo as well. I purchase Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil from my local health food store and occasionally add 2-3 small drops to my shampoo. It works very well and the TTO odor dissapates very quickly.

Thank you for the information. I found 9 products containing Tea Tree Oil on ChazDean.com

Perhaps all of the ingredients added to Tea Tree Oil are unnecessary to obtain the desired result, such as the various oils in the Home & Away Treatment Oil. The Tea Tree Oil that I add to my shampoo/conditioner sells for under $5 for 4 oz. compared to the current $54.98 for 4+1 oz. in the H&A Treatment Oil on QVC. Just a thought...
