Adding A Lot of Leave-In

Hi Wenners!

The more leave-in I add, the more lush and defined my curls are. On the downside, I get gummy hair.

My hair is short, thick and course. It can easily absorb 2-3 pumps from a 16 ounce bottle of Wen. 2-3 pumps from a 32 ounce bottle give me both WOW and gunk. Also, it takes a long time to absorb.

I do a single or double cleanse, add the leave-in to wet hair, add the Silicone of the Day (oil), then gel.

Does anyone have a method of applying an excessive amount of leave-in?

I have straight baby fine hair down to my shoulder blades. I follow directions and do not overdo. To much leave in pulls the curl out of my fine hair. My WEN hair is in such good condition that my hairdresser of 25+ years suggested stop getting perms. FYI. I have hypothyroidism, OA and lupus. These and the meds I am required to take make my hair loss greater than women my age and it was never able to grow past my shoulders. I also use WEN oil, etc and follow the directions. I appreciate that if/when my stylist and I have questions answers are only a call away. Almost forgot, my hair loss is a lot less now. I brush my hair gently each night so I really can judge the change. I do not have the hair of the models but I have great hair for a 71 yr old. Good luck.

Hey @Gram W ~ I just wanted to say I am glad you are having success with Wen! That is a lot to deal with and anything that feels like a treat is worth it.

I use about 5-6 pumps from a 16oz as a leave in on my curly hair. My hair looks short when it is curly, but if I blow it straight it is chin length. I add oil to my leave in. I use styling creme with a few pumps of glossing serum and then mousse. This helps my curls tremendously. However, if I air dry without blotting it can feel gummy and take forever to dry. I usually use the blow dryer with the diffuser attached and dry my curls that way.

Growing up we took the school bus. The bus pickup was next door to me. We all met on the enclosed front porch and could see about a mile. When we saw the bus coming we had to holler for Betty because she was still inside getting ready. She was one of those great girls you would love to hate. You know. She had the looks and style we 3 younger girls would love to have. She would come running with her hair wrapped in a towel and throw it on the porch floor as she went out the door. While waiting outside she would shake her head and finger comb her curls. By the time we got to school her hair was dry and looked perfect. I had a short perm and slept on rollers every night. If there was any moisture in the air my hair was limp and I just knew it looked horrible. The things that we think are so major when we are in jr high and high school. ;-)

I also find that I can't use a lot of leave-in @HonnyBrown I only use a small amount and find that if I use too much I definitely don't like the results.

I have curly hair at the ends of my hair, (below my chin, baby fine),

I also blot really well with my t-shirt, then I have been mixing a squirt of fig in a small spray bottle/with filtered water, and as my hair dry's I spray on the ends if they look like they need more, it seems to help without leaving a ton in my soaking wet hair in the shower...(if that makes sense)..

@HonnyBrown! Two things - one is through experimenting to find an exact amount of leave it for YOUR hair, i.e. it's enough to define your curls, and not too much to leave it "gummy". The other thing, you've mentioned of adding leave-in to wet hair, I do not know, how "wet" your hair is at the point of application, but maybe look into adding leave-in into SOAKING WET, I mean dripping-wet hair. THIS is what I heard Chaz saying and stressing out. Especially for curls. Also, maybe it's worth trying after a little while to put an old tee-shirt on to get rid of the excess leave-in, and then shake and fluff-up your curls again.

Use the products the way that Chaz recommends. If you use too much of the leave-in you will get gummy hair. However, you could try the texture balm. That might work better for you.

I have fine wavy hair that is almost chin length. I apply about 1/2 pump of the leave-in to soaking wet hair before I wrap it in a soft towel. Then about an hour or two later, I spray my hair to wet it again, add another 1/2 pump (this time I add 4 drops of the oil with it) and then I dry my hair. My hair tends to be on the dry side at times, so I may add more oil or the smoothing glossing serum later in the week when I style it again. I have to use a flat-iron on mine so the extra oil and serum are a must for me. I have a flat-iron that will go as low as 160 degrees so not quite as hot as some others. Doing this, I only have to wash my hair once a week which is much better for my hair.

Thanks Diva1! Our hair is the same length. I layer my leave-in, silicones and gel. I'll try adding the silicones to my leave-in next cleanse and see if that makes a difference.

My hair revolted against the SC and laughed at the GS. I wasn't brave enough to try the mousse.

I always air dry. I don't even own a dryer anymore!

Experimenting was how I found that 2-3 pumps from a 32 ounce bottle give me both WOW and gunk. Also, it takes a long time to absorb.

Chaz' recommendations (including the t-shirt) are givens.

I use a LOT of leave in but I dont use gel with it. Also, I use less leave in (but still more than recommended) if I am using the mousse. Overall while still in the shower and right after rinsing my hair I add the leave in, SC, SGS, Oil and then mousse (if I am adding it).

Sometimes I rewet my hair during the application. I do this to mix them all well into my hair and each other. Once I apply the mousse, I do not wet my hair again and I do not touch my hair again other than to lightly squeeze the extra water out while twisting into "Princess Leia" side buns.

It air dries out nicely, light and soft slighly stretched curls.

I'm still in the shower for the entire process so I use cold water from the showerhead. I dont come out until Princess Leia buns are in effect, lol.
