Menthol sensitivity

I'm not sure if I'm having a menthol allergy or not - itchy scalp. Which WEN formula should I use?

One of my problems with Wen was the menthol smell, which I couldn't tolerate. So I switched to the children's wen - no menthol.

Hi @HairAddict, @spent2much is right. The three rice-based Wen Kids formulas are the only ones which no not have any menthol in them:

* Wen Kids Apple (WKA)

* Wen Kids Watermelon (WKW)

* Wen Kids Strawberry-Banana (WKSB)

They each smell like the Jolly Ranchers candies of the same scents (since they're kids formulas).

I had a similar reaction to the first WEN formula I tried, and it got progressively worse. It wasn't the menthol, though, it was the lavender oil. Once I quit using that formula and switched to a different classic formula, I was fine. I also like the seasonals and the rice formulas, it's only the lavender I can't use. What formula have you been using that is causing you the problem?

I've been using pomegranate mainly with a seasonal/613 through my ends

HairAddict, all of those products are soy-based. Soybeans are used in a plethora of modern food products, so you may have developed an allergy to soy proteins. Have you had a similar reaction to the wheat or rice-based products? I know my reaction was to the lavender oil, but most of the time itchiness and bumpiness are allergy symptoms, and allergies are always to protein, because they are the body's reaction to a "foreign" (not human) protein. If you are already sensitive to wheat protein and eat a lot of soy, you may now have a problem with soy, and I'd suggest you try the rice-based formulas, such as BGT, MIF or the Kid's line. HTH!

It took me a while to figure out that my scalp didn't like menthol. Eventually, I switched to the WEN for kids. Have used apple and watermelon, but haven't tried the strawberry-banana yet.

I am a huge fan of Wen Kids....I had to switch due to scalp issues, (which are now gone).

I seem to be ok with most CC's now so I don't know what it was. BUT I got used to the no menthol on my scalp and really like the Wen kids...I use the other CC's now on the length but continue mostly WK's on my scalp... (oh WK's rinses out really nicely also)

@CamilleP, that's an excellent point.

I think that one of the reasons the soy-based lines were initially created was because some people have wheat allergies and, except for the soy-based Pomegranate CC, all of the other original Classic formulas were wheat-based.

Most of the next lines Chaz developed after that were soy-based CCs:

* 613 CC (and now 319 CC)

* all the Seasonals

* Pink Jasmine Peony (limited edition)

After Chaz developed the soy-based 613 CC, he created line that would specifically be gentle for children. I'm guessing that reason that the Wen Kids line was rice-based was that -- in addition to wheat allergies -- some people had soy allergies. Also, the Kids CC formulas were menthol free and are the only Wen CCs which are menthol free.

People who preferred the rice-based CCs kept asking Chaz to develop rice-based CCs which had adult scents (as opposed to the Jolly Rancher candy scents in the Kids CCs). Eventually Chaz developed a rice-based, bamboo water CC line with adult scents:

* Restorative CCs

* Wen Men (not in the Restorative line, but also rice-based)

@HairAddict, it sounds as you're still trying to figure out where the irritation issue is stemming from. -- The best thing to do may be to try each of the formulas you have purchased a few times in a row to try to isolate which CCs are giving you the irritations.

I believe that, before your current Wen purchases, you have several other Wen CCs that have had a proven track record. -- After you try a new particular CC a few times, you may want to cleanse your hair with one of the CCs that already works for you. -- Then the next time, go on to another of the new CCs you have just purchased and try that one for a few times.

If I remember correctly, you have purchased several Wen gallons and you have 30 days to return the ones which don't work.

I would suggest that if you are getting really close to that 30 return date, that you call QVC customer service and ask them if they can give you a bit more time past the 30 day return period... because otherwise you'll just have to return all of your gallons. -- I think they'll probably be able to give you an extension. Ask them to email you a confirmation about this, just so you'll have physical proof in case there's some question about it later on.

@HairAddict, all of these -- Pomegranate, 613 and all of the Seasonal CCs -- are soy-based.

So if these are the CCs that you had previously been using -- before your recent Wen CC purchases in June -- it doesn't sound as though you have a soy allergy.

It may be that the issue is with the Lavender oil. Some people do find particular essential oils to be irritating to their skin. I know that I've read that at least a few Wenners have found that the Lavender CC irritated their skin.

Chaz says that all of the kids are the same performance wise and the only difference is the scent. They all perform the same on my hair.

Wish that I could try some of the seasonals, but don't want to do anything to mess up my scalp.

@susan kay, thanks for sharing that. I had the feeling the all three Wen Kids CCs were probably more or less the same.

Have you tried the rice-based Restoratives:

* Bamboo Green Tea (BGT)

* Mandarin Italian FIg (MIF)

* Fragrance Free (FF, MIF's fragrance free twin)

I've tried the Wen Kids Watermelon (WKW) and it seems similar to the Restoratives.. but the extra ingredients in the Restorative line give my hair even better results

MIF and FF give my hair the very results of all the CCs.

@susan kay, yes, the the Restorative line CCs all have menthol in them.

In fact, with the exception of the three Wen Kids CCs, all of the other Wen CCs have menthol in them.

I'm not sure it was a menthol sensitivity. My sister gave me some of her MIF and I don't have itchy scalp anymore. Maybe it was just my sensitive skin acting up...

@HairAddict I'm so glad the MIF worked out well for you

The MIF has rice protein instead of the soy protein based CCs that you've been using, so it could be the soy that's causing the itch.
