I originally started this thread (original Wen 101 thread) on March 14, 2014 because I thought it would be a good way to consolidate some of the great Wenformation that we all share in this forum.

I am reconstructing the new Wen 101 thread for our brand new Wen forum. I am also revising the format of the Wen 101 thread for easier viewing.

Please note that part of the Wen 101 and Wen FAQ threads have not been updated since August 2014, so some of the information is out of date and/or incomplete. I am planning to bring both of these threads up-to-date.

WEN PRODUCTS ON QVC - key information

June Wen Gallons Month -- Classic, Kids & select summer Seasonal gallons -- WEN Gallons: Only Available in June -- In June 2016, for the second time, select Seasonal gallons were also available (Summer Mango Coconut and Summer Honey Peach).

Seasonal Gallons -- As of summer 2016, for each season, one or two of the Seasonals will be available in the gallon size. As of Fall 2016, these select Seasonal gallons will only be available for ONE WEEKEND. In September 2016, the Fall Ginger Pumpkin gallons were available for the Wen Fall TSV weekend (9/23-9/25). -- On Chaz's facebook page, Gilliian from his customer service department thought that, for the winter season, Winter Vanilla Mint (WVM) gallons were likely to be offered.

Fall Wen Gallons -- 613, 319, BGT, MIF & select fall Seasonal gallons are available through the end of October (unless they sell out early) ---- THE HISTORY: The Fall selection of Wen gallons are generally available from mid-September through the end of October. --- 613 gallons have been offered since 2013. --- Bamboo Green Tea (BGT) was originally offered in June 2014, and the following year was permanently switched to a Fall gallons. On September 19th, 2015, Mandarin Italian Fig (FIG) was added to the Fall gallons. BGT and MIF are two of the formulas in the Restorative line. --- For the Fall 2015, these gallons were available through the end of October, or until they sold out and both BGT and MIF were sold out in mid October. 613 was available through the end of October. This particular Honey Complex is a mixture of Manuka Honey Extract, Eucalyptus Honey Extract, Orange Blossom Honey Extract, and Sage Honey Extract. It is only in the SHP. Some Wenners have mentioned that Chaz has said it was too expensive to use in future Seasonal Cleansing Conditioners (though I have not heard his mention this). -- As of Fall 2016, all of the Seasonals which were created after SHP have Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey in their ingredients decks (FTP, WWC, SHL, SCLV and FVWP). Wen Men, Pink Jasmine Peony, MIF, and FF (but not BGT) have included Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey in their ingredients decks. -- The 613 and 319 Cleansing Conditioners each list a Honey Extract in their ingredients decks.

* Beginning with the Spring Orange Blossom (SOB), going forward, the 4-Tea Complex has been added to all of the Seasonals (through Fall 2016): SOB, SHP, FTP, WWC, SHL, SCLV, and FVWP. -- The 4-Tea Complex is also in the Restorative line Cleansing Conditioners (BGT, MIF, and FF), as well as Pink Jasmine Peony and Wen Men Cleansing Conditioners. -- The 4-Tea Complex is a combination of Green Tea Leaf Extract, White Tea Leaf Extract, Rooibos Red Tea Extract, and Black Tea Leaf Extract.

* each new Seasonal is generally only available for the three-month initial season when it was first introduced. -- Because Wenners get so attached to their favorite Seasonals, beginning in September 2014, Chaz has been experimenting with "opening up" the Wen Seasonals closet, on a season by season basis. For each season, a limited quantity of the prior Seasonals (for that season) have been brought back. And when they're gone, they're really gone. So order sooner rather than later.

* For the first time, in June 2015, Chaz made four Seasonal scents available in gallons during June Wen Gallons Month: one for each season. For June 2015, he chose Spring Orange Blossom (SOB), Summer Mango Coconut (SMC), Fall Ginger Pumpkin (FGP) and Winter Vanilla Mint (WVM). He seems to have selected the most popular Seasonal for each season. -- Beginning in June 2016, Chaz decided to release select Seasonal gallons within their respective seasons (logistically it was easier to manage). For the month of June 2016, Summer Honey Peach and Summer Mango Coconut gallons were available. -- Going forward, probably only one Seasonal scent (per season) will be available in gallon form. -- At this point it sounds as though Fall Ginger Pumpkin and Winter Vanilla Mint will be the the upcoming gallons available (though this is not definite).

* Additionally, for the past few December TSVs, Seasonals have been a part of the mix. The Wen December TSV generally includes (5) 16oz. Cleansing Conditioners and has been priced at $80 for the past few years (Chaz is holding the price at $80 this year -- Thank you, Chaz!!! -- The December 2015 TSV included three different TSV options:

Wen Cleansing Conditioner Formulas Used for Specific Reasons

___

Universals - work well on all types of hair

* Sweet Almond MInt (SAM) / Pomegranate (POM) / Tea Tree (TT) -- are all considered Universals (i.e. for everyone) -- SAM, the first CC Chaz created, is sometimes too heavy for baby fine hair.

Most Popular Wen Cleansing Conditioner Formula (in my opinion)

Tea Tree (TT) -- it really helps to keep your scalp healthy, balances oil production, keeps dandruff at bay, and seems to make your hair grow more quickly. Chaz calls it one of the "Universals" which means it works well for all types of hair. Most Wenners on this board (as well as the Wen models & hosts) seem to incorporate it into their routine. Besides its slightly medicinal smell, which most people get used to fairly quickly, I've only read a few complaints about it.

Amino Acid Complex & Extra Skin Care Ingredients

* 613 / 319 / Bamboo Green Tea (BGT) / Mandarin Italian Fig (MIF) / (rice-based) Fragrance Free (FF) / Wen Men / Pink Jasmine Peony (PJP) / all the Seasonals -- add Chaz's 11 amino acid complex (to give your hair more protein) and additional skin care ingredients to your hair. 613 is the most concentrated (to quote Chaz: "Wen on steroids"). -- If you already have a healthy head of hair or if you have thick/coarse hair, then use 613 sparingly at first. To a lesser extent, this applies to all the cleansing conditioners which contain the amino acid complex. If you have one of these hair types and you use the amino acid cleansing conditioners too frequently, your hair may start to feel like straw or even get brittle and start to break. Your hair is made of protein. Depending on your hair type, too much protein may not be a good thing. -- Generally it's great for baby fine, damaged hair... like mine. My hair can't get enough of it.

Bamboo Water & Bamboo Extract - flexibility & strength

* Bamboo Green Tea (BGT), Mandarin Italian Fig (MIF) and Fragrance Free (FF) -- are the three rice-based cleansing conditioners in the Restorative line, which uses an exclusive, proprietary bamboo water and bamboo extract in all their formulations. Bamboo contains natural silica which increases hair strength while keeping it flexible. This way the hair doesn't become rigid and more likely to break (which can happen if sand silica is used as an ingredient). -- Some people find these formulas a bit drying, probably because the amino acid complex is in them (for more information on this, read through the "Amino Acid Complex" information in which is in the previous paragraph).

While several other Wen Cleansing conditioners also have either the bamboo water or the bamboo extract in their formulas, these two ingredients are most concentrated in the Restorative line of Cleansing Conditioners:

* Bamboo Green Tea -- bamboo water (3rd ingredient), bamboo extract (6th ingredient)

* Mandarin Italian Fig & Fragrance Free -- bamboo water (3rd ingredient), bamboo extract (7th ingredient)

Summer Coconut Lime Verbena also has bamboo water as it's 3rd ingredient, but it doesn't have any bamboo extract in it's formula -- 613, 319 and Wen Men all have bamboo extract in their formulas, but the ingredient is much farther down the product listings (which means that there is less bamboo extract in them). None of these three formulas have bamboo water as an ingredient.

Clarifying / Astringent

* Cucumber Aloe (CA) -- most clarifying/astringent for an oily scalp (some people find it too drying). Cucumber Aloe was formulated specifically for teenagers because their fluctuating hormonal levels can result in excess oil production on their body and scalp.

* Tea Tree (TT) -- In particular, the tea tree oil helps normalize an oily scalp by rebalancing sebum production (your body's natural oil). Results may take 3-4 months. Also, as an anti-fungal, tea tree oil helps get rid of excessive fungal growth which can cause dandruff.

Note: all of the Wen Cleansing Conditioners are formulated to normalize an oily scalp over time. The balance of ingredients in the Tea Tree Cleansing Conditioner just seem to be the most effective.

Menthol-Free

* Kids formulas -- Wen Kids Apple (WKA), Wen Kids Watermelon (WKW), & Wen KIds Strawberry-Banana (KWSB) -- most gentle for the hair and scalp (rice-based / no menthol). The Wen KIds formulas are the only Wen Cleansing Conditioners that are menthol-free.

Moisture

* Fig (FIG) -- most moisturizing (sometimes too heavy for baby fine hair)

* Summer Honey Peach (SHP) / Summer Mango Coconut (SMC) / Mandarin Italian Fig (MIF) / rice-based Fragrance Free (FF) -- moisturizing (just not quite as moisturizing as Fig) without weighing down baby fine hair. -- Some people find MIF and FF a bit drying.

Volume

* Lavender (LAV) -- for volume, if you have a lot of hair. Probably not the best choice for people with not a lot of baby fine hair. -- Possibly the witch hazel, but more likely the lavender extract, can make it too drying for people with not a lot of baby fine hair. Also, it sometimes increases the frizz factor in hair. -- LAV is the trickiest cleansing conditioner to use. It doesn't work well for a number of people.

* Tea Tree (TT) -- maybe for some volume, if you have baby fine hair. TT also works very well for people with not a lot of baby fine hair.

ALLERGIES -- Wen formulas used because of specific allergies

*** to be on the safe side, confirm this information with Chaz's Wen Customer Service Department and *ALWAYS* read the ingredients listings first before using any of these products. ***

Wen *Cleansing Conditioners* - best choices

* wheat allergies -- soy-based Seasonal, 613 and Pomegranate cleansing conditioners. Also, rice-based Restorative, Wen Kids, and Wen Men cleansing conditioners.

Starting with just the Cleansing Conditioner is a good way to begin.

Based on what I've read in this forum, I think these are the most popular products. Most people use the Cleansing Conditioner, Styling Creme, Remoist and Treatment Oil (or their own homemade treatment oil version using 95% jojoba oil, plus a maximum of 5% essential oil). A lot of people use the Mousse, Volumizing Treatment Spray, Replenishing Treatment Mist, and Re-Moist (though most don't use all four of these products). Before he created the RTM, Chaz used to give out a homemade RTM recipe (Help on RTM Recipe / Homemade Spray Bottles!). I've included this information because if you're new to Wen, it can be a bit daunting trying to figure out where to start. Just starting with the cleansing conditioner is a good way to begin as mentioned above. Chaz has created a number of different products in response to what's been requested, so go slow. Just use what you need.

Tips

Sleep onit! Apply WEN Cleansing Conditioner to wet hair before bed as a hydrating overnight treatment. Cover hair with a shower cap. In your morning shower rinse well, and you’ll begin the day with shiny, silky hair!
Try to avoid using heated styling tools, like flat irons and curling irons. They can dry out, damage, and burn your hair causing breakage.
Keep your style looking fresh even on days you don’t cleanse your hair with WEN. Using the WEN® Replenishing Treatment Mist, mist hair thoroughly holding bottle 12 – 18 inches above hair. Shake out and restyle or flufffff up your hair.
To help avoid breakage and to keep hair from burning always keep your blow dryer moving – never holding it on one spot – and use the concentrator nozzle that comes with your blow dryer.
Avoid metal and aluminum-based brushes when blow-drying as they get very hot and can singe hair or cause breakage.
For a natural look when coloring your hair, avoid bleach and never go more than two or three shades lighter or darker than your natural hair color.
When you need a color touch up only apply color to the roots and avoid running through the ends of the hair. If the ends need a refresh use a semi-permanent color to avoid over-processing your hair and causing damage.
Ask you colorist to use a high lift color rather than bleach to create highlights. It contains low levels of ammonia so it’s less damaging to your hair.
If your hair is oily or fine try the Cucumber Aloe or Lavender formulas. They won’t weigh your hair down and with continual use it will add more volume and body.
WEN isn’t like an ordinary shampoo so you want to use more of it, not less. You can never use too much! The more you use, the better the results.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Rinse hair thoroughly, apply WEN® into your palms and rub together. Use 10-16 pumps for short hair, 16-24 pumps for medium length hair and 24-32 pumps for long hair. If your hair is longer/thicker you may need to increase the amount of pumps. Apply to scalp and hair, adding a splash of water to evenly distribute. WEN® has no harsh detergents or sodium lauryl sulfate, so it won't lather. Massage thoroughly into hair and leave on for the remainder of your shower. Rinse thoroughly and completely, massaging scalp and running fingers through to the ends. Apply 1/2 to 1 pump depending on hair length and texture as a leave-in conditioner to soaking wet hair. For best results we highly suggest you cleanse, rinse and repeat, using half the recommended pumps for the first cleanse, and the remaining half for the second cleanse. Unlike many ordinary shampoos, you may find you don't need to cleanse as often.

Immediately after, add 1-3 pumps of the Styling Creme of your choice to soaking wet hair starting at the back of the head and working thought to the ends.

Let hair dry naturally, style or wrap a towel around your head to absorb moisture. Do not abrasively dry your head with a towel as this will stress the hair and cause it to frizz.

Additional Suggestions

You can cleanse daily but when used properly you should only have to cleanse every 2-3 days. Our 16oz size should last you between 4-6 weeks.

For extra hydrating and conditioning, you can use the Cleansing Conditioner as an overnight deep hydrating mask treatment. Simply leave on the hair after you have cleansed, cover hair with a shower cap or plastic bag overnight, and rinse out thoroughly in the morning.

If you have curly or ethnic hair, use WEN® Treatment Oil. When applying your leave-in, mix 2-6 drops of Treatment Oil to the Cleansing Conditioner first and then 2-6 drops of Treatment Oil to the Styling Creme. You may also need to increase the amount of Treatment Oil and pumps of the Cleansing Conditioner and Styling Creme for different hair textures.

Create a Refresher Spray

In a 6oz spray bottle mix 4 pumps of WEN Cleansing Conditioner, 2-4 drops of WEN Oil and 2 pumps of your preferred Styling Creme. Use warm water initially to help mix ingredients and shake well before each use.

PLEASE NOTE: The above instructions were intended for use with the 6oz/16oz Cleansing Conditioners. For all other sizes, please refer to the label on your product for appropriate amount of pumps to use.
