Mike Tomlin has stepped down as Steelers head coach after nearly two decades with the team.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II announced the move on social media Tuesday afternoon.

"During our meeting today, Coach Tomlin informed me that he has decided to step down as our Head Coach," Rooney said. "Obviously, I am extremely grateful to Mike for all the hard work, dedication and success we have shared over the last 19 years."

Tomlin informed the team of his decision at a 2 p.m. end-of-season meeting after the Steelers were trounced by the Houston Texans 30-6 Monday night in the AFC wild-card round.

Tomlin, 53, was the longest-tenured head coach of a single North American professional sports franchise. His departure ends an era in Pittsburgh sports history.

As a native of western Pa., a lifelong Steelers fan, and someone whose family has had season tickets to Steelers games for over 40 years, I don't think Mike Tomlin was the only reason the Steelers didn't have a good season again this year. The inability to find a quality replacement for Big Ben, the highest paid defense in the NFL not playing well, and the terrible play calling didn't help. Tomlin is the coach, he is not the General Manager. That is Omar Khan. Maybe Khan shouldn't have spent so much money on some of these players. Maybe he should have signed some of the great players we had instead of trading them away or letting them become free agents. I don't think Tomlin is blameless, but the train wreck that has become the Pittsburgh Steelers isn't all his fault.

I knew something would happen after the Steelers lackluster performance yesterday & in recent seasons. Its sad, but its time for a change & the general manager should maybe be changed too.

I think we all knew this was coming. However I wish him the very best and the next few years will be ones of great change. So I will launder my game shirt, put my cap, bear and blanket away until next season. Now I gotta figure out what teams I want to move on this weekend!

After watching that game last night, I'd be too embarrassed to continue if I was he. Worst defense I ever saw. At the end of the game, I figured he'd be fired.

My son is a huge Steelers fan (we live in and are from St. Louis) and he was soooo disappointed that his team was eliminated Monday night ! I don't watch football and the only connection I have to the game is my Church Pastor who is a hall of fame player, Aneas Williams who played for the St. Louis Rams before they moved to LA.

I was a such a Steeler fan for 40+ years, seldom missing a home game and driving to St. Vincent College for training camp. Until they brought in Michael Vick. . .then every piece of Steeler themed merchandise left our home, even the huge logo came down off our motorhome. I'm still bitter about it! (LOL!)

Not all fans are happy with the loss of Mike Tomlin. He's done a great job and is a class act. Not all coaches are. Best of luck to him and a huge THANK YOU from this Steelers fan.
