Jordan Chiles Individual Floor Routine Medal Controversy

The Bronze Metal was originally awarded to Romania's Ana Maria Barbuso, but then overturned after a challenge by Chiles' coach. Now they are saying that the challenge came in 4 seconds past the challenge time limit so the IOC is reviewing.

So emotionally damaging for both of these young women! Just give them both a bronze metal!

I did read about this. After reading the entire article, in my opinion, rules are rules. You can't really have a time limit then say well, it was only 4 seconds. I know it sounds so ridiculous but what about next time. What if it's 7 seconds. Do you extend it then again for the athlete? It could go on and on.

It's definitely a bummer but if it is the rule and her coach did not challenge in the allotted time frame then the consequences should be set forth.

It takes the judges longer to score than they give the coaches to review the deductions.

It is a broken system.

This is totally the judges fault.When reviewing other sports play reviews it is one action they look at.... not a whole routine.

It has been abusive situation towards both of the athletes. Gymnastics is a painful and grueling sport.

Doping and cheating should be the only reason to take away an awarded medal after the game is finished.

Give the other girl a medal .... everybody gets a trophy..

Jordan Chiles has been stripped of her bronze medal, over a matter of seconds is what I heard in terms of the United States' original appeal of her score. They were late by seconds?

Just so wrong, the entire thing was botched and unfair.

This is one of the inherent flaws and dangers in a sport governed, in large part, by subjective judgment. Gymnastics, diving, figure skating, breaking

It's not who jumped the highest or ran the fastest, which are quantifiable.

I feel bad for Jordan.

But it's not an Olympic Games without some controversy.

Every sport and discipline has its own set of rules and they must be abided by. In this case, I commend the IOC for standing by the rules of the International Gymnastics Federation, as painful as that may be.

Wow, I feel for her. What a week! I am surprised that it took so long to arrive at a decision. admittedly i don't know a lot about gymnastics so I am not an authority. I read that Jordan is not engaging in social media for a while because of some of the hateful comments that are being made. What is going on these days! I know she will be fine and this is one of many lessons she will learn about this thing we call life!

An interesting story I just learned about showing how slow the IOC appeals process can be.

10 athletes were awarded what are called "reallocated medals" at a ceremony in Paris. These athletes were elevated up a status due primarily to doping charges against winners.

They span the Olympic Games from Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008 and London 2012! Some went from silver to gold, some bronze to silver.

Imagine waiting 24 years to get your medal. Here is Beverly McDonald of Jamaica, now 54. She came in 4th in the 200 m race in Sydney. Now she has a bronze medal!

If the appeal takes that long then she may have to return it in good faith till this mess is resolved, so unfair! They may have to come retrieve the medal from her

USA Gymnastics says they have conclusive video evidence that the inquiry was submitted in time and not seconds too late.

If the 4 second time issue is true then the judges should have disqualified the inquiry right then & there,on the spot. If they didn't, then they should be bared from disqualifying her now.

Jordan Chiles should be allowed to keep her medal 🥇.

Ana Barbosu was on the podium when the first challenge was decided.

This would be the first individual medal for each of them.

The Romanian gymnast has also been hatefully attacked on social media and has reached out to Jordan to commiserate, acknowledging that the athletes are not to blame.

I agree now that the appropriate solution is to award two medals.

Ugly all around for every athlete involved.
