SUPER BOWL START TIMES: WHY SO LATE?

I'm not a football fan, but this is a sincere question ...

I just noticed that the game starts Sunday at 6:30pm EST. Seems to me like many employed viewers would have to take Monday off or call in sick.

The whole weekend seems "wasted".

Why doesn't the game run on Saturday nights instead?

The timing is good for me. We go out to eat Sunday afternoon and are home by game time.

Saturday night is date night or a dinner out night for many and is not a good night for football.

Can't see Sunday night football interfering with Monday work. For those that may imbibe too much during the game, perhaps Monday as a personal day from work.

Seems like having the game Sunday evening allows people to do their usual weekend errands, chores or fun things and then settle in for a night of football Sunday evening

@Tinkrbl44 Since you aren't a football fan please know that most people don't call in sick the day after unless they drank excessively. I'm 76 and have watched the Super Bowl forever and don't know anyone who had to take Monday off OR who considered the weekend "wasted.' I honestly don't know where you get this idea.

@Tinkrbl44. Maybe you're just living in the wrong time zone. Game starts at 4:30pm here. It'll only be 3:30pm in Nevada where it's being played.

I have been watching in for a very long time and have never missed a day of work unless it was planned and approved by my boss. I think a few people may be a little tried but they will be fine! I think whatever time it is someone is going to complain. I am just waiting for the game to start!

Okay. I got the idea because the super bowl is a BIG deal.

Just wondered why it's done so late in the weekend, that's all. Networks always consider what is "prime time" for any show.

As I posted in my OP, it's a sincere question and didn't understand the logic behind it.

Some people have suggested that the Monday after the Super Bowl should be a holiday lol.

Even when my team was in it and won so many times, I got up early and went to work the next day. I'm not a drinker, football is enjoyable for me just as a sport. Don't need any of the other stuff.

It starts late on the East Coast for ratings, pure and simple. Just like so many other sporting events. Although the Super Bowl could start much earlier and the same number of people would watch, it's the biggest sporting event in the US.

I live in NJ and it starts at 6:30 here too. I'm not a football fan, Superbowl or otherwise. Matter of fact, I don't care for any sport shows. Dh and oldest ds love it! I do like the food though! 😂😋

I agree with this, I am in CA and see that all that was set to start at 11. I am not a big football fan but I usually turn on the superbowl.

@Tinkrbl44 - We have ALWAYS watched the Super Bowl! Sometimes we're home; sometimes we're at a party.

IIRC it used to be Sunday afternoon, some time around 2 or 4ish. I remember that because we had to make sure Sunday services were over on time!

One year about 20 years ago we had a party for the youth at church. We had food and brought a TV in. (Now we have 3 big screens). The kids had fun, but we didn't do it the following year. Most of them wanted to watch with their families, in their own homes, on a big screen!

I always thought it was on Sunday because that's when most NFL games are played. Another reason might be most viewers can be home on Sunday.

I also remember about 20 years ago a lot of stores had special "sales" for women. They were all day long, so if I went to one I was always home in time for the actual game. -- and the commercials of course!

I started watching the pre game show and it was green slime Nickelodeon silliness and decades old footage of Brent Musburger. No point to any of that, other than commercial revenue.

Luckily ABC has the Celtics game

@Tinkrbl44 It has always started at 6:30 pm EST/3:30 pm PST/12:30 pm in Hawaii. Professional football is almost always played on Sundays. The game is usually over by 10 pm so no big deal for most people,

If you're not a football fan, it doesn't matter when it's played!!

What's nice is that if you win the Super Bowl most of the businesses close for the big SB parade mid week. That's when people would call in sick! Luckily the parade has been in Kansas City the last 2 years and hopefully again this week!
