Do you remember ...

I hope this is the right place for this, but the other day I was speaking to my dh about something or other and I said something about the dial tone. My 7 year old granddaughter was sitting next to me and asked what it was. I explained as her household only uses cell phones. Later that night I began to think about all the things her generation will never know. I thought of vinyl records, with sleeves and jackets, carbon paper, and typewriters that aren't connected to the Internet. As a child of the 50's there are so many things that have gone by the wayside, some for the better, some not so much. I'm sure there are many things I forgot about. Can you think of any more?

My ten year old granddaughter was standing next to my landline phone on the wall....it was ringing....i asked her to answer it.....she said she didn't know how!! I remember my mother making coffee in a pyrex coffee pot on the stovetop.....it boiled over every morning!!

I was born in the early 70s but have an "old soul."

How about hair dryers that looked like little suitcases and had tubes coming from them that led to little caps that you wore while your hair dried?

How about putting coins in a public payphone to make a call?

How about returning glass bottles (beer/soda) to a store for a refund?

S&H Green Stamps catalogues? My grandmother hated pasting the little stickers in the corresponding little booklets, so whenever I visited her, I did it. Usually she let me go with her to choose an item at the Green Stamps store once a bunch of books were full.

There are sooo many but these are the ones the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

A lot of expressions are also unheard of now, too. "That's the pot calling the kettle black" is neither a drug reference nor a racial slur... My students looked at me like I had just committed a major offense when I used it last year.

Quite a few years ago we had a record turntable in the garage. Our sons were listening to a record, when it got to the end they wanted to know how to re-wind it.

Now, they both own turntables and look for "vinyl" (and sometimes steal from our stash)

I crack-up my 5 1/2 yr old GS when I say, whopsie-daisy and more fun than a barrel of monkeys, and silly goose.

Typewriters come to mind. As a female in late 1950s junior high school, I was required to take typing. I was awful at it. Give me French conjugations or historical dates to memorize and I was fine, but that typewriter was my nemesis. How ironic that I still need to know how to type, for emails and texts.

Then there were transistor radios, the greatest little invention to take to the beach. And the highlight of my adolescence was the pink princess phone I got for my sweet 16 birthday present.

OMGoodness! You reminded me about pay toilets! Remember? You had to put a dime in the thing on the door and crank the knob, like a gum ball machine! I'd forgotten all about those until you mentioned pay phones!😀

I remember replacing 45s in a jukebox. Taking the old ones home, like ELVIS PRESLEY. Now, I wonder why I don't have them???

Maybe even further back, pulley clothes lines, ringer washing machines, cloth diapers, baby bottle sterilizers, making baby formula, answering machines, pagers, white out, & on & on, good thread, really got me to thinking

My grandmother had a pink princess phone....she loved betting on horse races....we'd catch her on that phone calling her bookie!!

i was just talking to my kids about waiting all day for the ice man to give us a chunk of ice when I suddenly remembered,I think we had an ,"icebox" way back when.I sort of remember my mom empting the bowl under it. I don't remember getting a fridge but my mom must have been the happest woman in the world that day.

We did not have AC in my day.I was married a few yrs when I finally got a small used one for my BR window because I had bad allergies...........lol

We also had party line phones ,we shared with other people........lol How about that.....lol

...........and,we used to love to run out into the fog that the bug fogger machine made every nite at 7pm to kill the mosquitoes!

I remember when the tv's had a knob that you had to turn and get up in order to change the channel. My mother always had us change the channel as soon as we were getting comfortable, one of us would get up to change the channel.

Your post on typing reminded me of the summer school typing course I signed up for between 9 th and 10th grades. It wasn't part of the academic program but it was a lifesaver when I got to college: I typed all my own papers and Honors thesis ( the latter was in French...all 40 pages!

i remember you needed a lot of coins for the ladies room...the stalls and the vending machine.

Those weren't the days!!!

When I was 16 I was given a "Swinger" Polaroid camara. Came with a case and everything I needed. You could take a picture, pull it out of the camara, smear some smelly stuff all over it and watch while the picture started to materialize~!

Oh typewriters~! My Dad had a couple of portable 1950's typewriters and he typed extremely well all the time. I was encouraged to type early, did so and have been grateful I learned ever since. When I started college we went downtown to a smelly little office store and he picked out a 1927 Underwood Champion that I used all through school! It was and STILL IS a great machine. My oldest son (who loves everything old) now is the owner and user.....

When you think about the changes that have happened, it can be overwhelming for sure.....

My granddaugher is in the 7th grade.....always been a straight A student....this year she was complaining about having to take Keyboarding....that's what they call Typing class now.....she had a B....i told her how much i loved typing in school.....i told her i'd give her fifty bucks if she got an A......i now owe her fifty bucks!! but she still uses her thumbs when typing on her electronic devices!!! Yeah..i'm old.....but i can still type!!

Party lines! Yes! I also remember no stores had AC! When visiting my grandparents in Kentucky heat we'd always nap from 2-4! My grandma pulled the shades, folded back a crisp white sheet (ironed, of course) where we'd enjoy hearing stories about when she was a girl in 1904! She died in 1986 and used her ringer washing machine until that day!

Remember the first remote control tv box with the wire attached to the tv was spread across the room to your chair......lol Everyone would trip over it......lol

How about black and white TV sets ? I remember the first color tv and only a few shows broadcast in color! Anyone remember the Summer Playhouse? I think it ran while the other shows taped in the summer. It was before re-runs.

Any kids of the fifties? I remember when they changed the flag in my schoolroom to the fifty star from 48! Why no 49 star flag? Too close together?

we also got milk for snack. The milk guy brought the crate in the room. It has little glass bottles with pogs and paper doily on top!

my grandmother had daily dairy service! She left a note and in am the milk man left her order in an aluminum box on the porch!

Oh I have some fond memories to share too.

How about out door bathrooms? Seriously my great aunt and uncle on the farm didn't have indoor plumbing until the early 70's. They lived on a farm and also had the phone on the wall where you turned the crank and talked into a small mouth piece attached to the phone. Party line USA

No Air Conditioning except in the theaters. We owned one floor fan.

Penny Candy 5cents could get you a small bag full.

Wind up alarm clocks.

Bus rides 10cents

Saddle shoes

crenolins (spelling)

cans of pop and beer where you needed a can opener

I am sure there are lots more, but that's all I can think of right now.

I was born in the early 50's.

Those were the days.. some good and some not so good.

I had forgotten theaters were cooled! I remember days before canned soda, little bottles only! No 2ltr!
