I personally feel the word "hateful" is OTT and irrelevant but you added it, so...

She's saying that the use of profanity does not necessarily reflect on someone's "morals" and that saying so is judgmental; she didn't say hateful :-)

On the subject of judgment (and morals) - I don't spend my life with moral compass in hand judging everyone I come into contact with measured against myself or any higher authority. AFAIC it's a waste of time even if I were so inclined (which I'm decidedly not - casting the first stone, and all that), and sets one up to be not only judgmental but prideful...and there are a few well-known comments about pride that I'm sure the moral judgers are also familiar with.

I don't know if I'm just becoming a "prude" in my old age or what but it seems to me that profanity is becoming more rampant both on the street and on social media. I'm concerned about my grandchildren being exposed to language at home that my children never were (because my daughters-in-law don't seem to have had the same morals instilled in them that my sons had) but I guess if they don't hear it at home, they're going to hear it and read it everywhere else anyway. I personally find the "F" word extremely offensive but am exposed to it daily, even at work. I just find it sad. Thanks for letting me rant.

I've noticed that the "f bomb" seems to be dropped quite casually the past few years. Hearing it still makes me cringe. I guess it's just a part of a more liberal & casual society than it was when I was a kid in the 50s.

More of the coarsening of our culture. We are all a bit to blame. Who didn't chuckle the first time we heard a young person in a movie use a swear word? The film and TV industry has since been sliding down that slippery slope. I hope the pendulum will swing back the other way soon. My 2¢ worth.

Where the f-bomb really bugs me is when it's used in film dialogue in nearly every line. If it's a film I'm watching at home I'll turn it off after about 10 minutes.

Just can't take that and it seems like a cop-out if that's all the screenwriter can use for dialogue. Even in old films, the sordid characters had interesting dialogue.

Now, that's not to say that I don't throw the occasional f-bomb. But it's very occasional. Except when I'm driving.

It's a result of a limited vocabulary and declining virtue. I'm far from being perfect, but I do get sick of hearing people open their mouths (often in front of small children) and speak nothing but vulgarity.

I recently heard a man throw out the F Bomb in a public setting and I said to him, "bless your heart! Her challenge to me was to use one of them rather than a profane word. It was something I took to heart and now many years later, I still try to abide by that.

Remember the "can't hurt poor wittle babies self esteem"? Now the chickens have come back home to roost. No respect/no manners, but plenty of 4 letter words to spit out regardless of who is around.

Now it's everyone gets a trophy. Can't have baby think he/she is a loser.

i own a business in an industry that is mostly men......and i hear profanity on a daily basis. i am not really one that uses too many curse words, but i think i have gotten used to hearing it. i definitely DONT agree that people who use it have a limited vocabulary.

i have recently raised three children and if you go into their high school you will hear profanity in the halls pretty frequently.
