HELP WITH BAGS?

I was at grocery store today and happen to have a lot of bags...seltzers, TP and PT, etc. As I was headed towards the door, the bag guy asked if I needed help to the car and load them for me?

Talk about aging...I guess the silver hair made it look like I couldn't do it all myself. I thanked him and said with a laugh that I can handle it all myself....and always do.

I know - I'm always surprised too lol. I think I look pretty good - and fit - for my age but maybe not so much. And no gray hair.

I was at a local Peebles (Bealls) some years ago in the makeup dept - thought I was looking pretty good - I was asked if I wanted a makeover lol. Talk about a downer.

I would always accept the help. It has nothing to do with age or ability. Letting someone do a kind deed is a good thing.

Yep. This poster complains about the world we live in but then rejects kindness that is offered. Maybe this was G-d's way of showing the OP there are still nice people in the world but she chose to dismiss it because of pride.

@Shanus In my neck of the woods, grocery store employees are unionized. All except the mentally disabled males who stand behind the cashier just waiting to help w/groceries.

I always except their help & tip them.

If they shake their head no I stuff the $$ in their shirt pocket, say thank you & am in my car before they know what just happened.

Talk about a downer...I was shopping while minding my own business when a toddler riding in a cart pointed at me and cried out, "grandma". Her mom was so embarrassed, apologized and said, "we love grandmas in our family". Great explanation.

Yes, I think it was the white hair. I recalled my mom mentioning the same thing happening to her once.

I pushed a flatbed cart to my car with 40lb bags of softener salt when a young man wanted to put them in my van, I can do it myself but just smiled & said That's so thoughtful, Thank You. We chatted for a few then he was on his way, the pleasant encounter made my day. I've always liked helping others & an important part of that is accepting help too.

@FranandZoe I'm sure it had nothing to do with your appearance. I bet it was to make $ales while showing you new products.

When we were very poor married college students, my aunt tried to give my husband $20 and he didn't know what to do. Well, when we would go visit them it got to be a thing

She would put money in with cookies, chase him all over the hill both of them running and laughing. Throw money in the car window at him when we'd leave, all sorts of sneak attacks. Pretty funny thinking back. He would hug and kiss her and thank her and write thank you notes when she out-foxed him!

Many years ago this was common practice at all the grocery stores in my area. They weren't tipped, it was just all part of the checkout process. I think if you ask while you're checking out now, they will get someone to do it.

Maybe they are trying to bring back the good old days, when they had a cashier, a bagger and they would take your shopping cart to your car and unload in your car......those were the days....lol

and...your gas was pumped and oil checked and windshield washed.....now I'm dating myself...but it was nice 😊

Not so sure of that...

Every time I visit my local Publix, the "Bag Person" offers to take my bags to the car - It depends on how heavy and how many bags I have, whether I accept the offer.

And I know for a fact that they are NOT allowed to take tips.

I don't do my grocery shopping in the stores anymore, always online now, but I certainly would accept help with bags of stuff if asked.

I taught at our Tribal School (Ojibwe) and asked the students when is one considered a Mindimooay. (Old Lady)They all said when you have white hair. Some people grey early?

I was REALLY embarrassed when a young man in a wheelchair last summer, who was a Veteran offered to pay for my stuff in a Hardware Store. I politely thanked him and dec!ined. He was trying to be nice to a Senior Citizen, I guess?

I see it as he was just being nice and nothing to do with age. That is hard to come by these days. I was at Lowe's getting a few bags of mulch and they were pretty heavy. Two men walked by me seeing I was trying to put them on the cart and just walked by.

I like to think that maybe they just needed a break and to talk to a kind ear. When I was growing up, there were dedicated "bag boys" who bagged and took the groceries to the car. I never thought much about it, it was just their job.

I had a wonderful experience once in the grocery store when a child, maybe 3 or 4 (I've never been blessed with children so don't know ages very well), called out "grandma" and reached for me. I'm white and she was not; not all see color. Her mother looked horrified, my heart just swelled a few sizes larger.

I totally agree with you. A few years ago we had bag boys at the grocery and they always carried out your groceries. And I would be honored if someone asked if they could help me do anything. That's what I taught my children. To help other people. I think it's rude to talk that way about someone trying to help.
