@SharkE. Is that railroad trestle fire anywhere near you? It looked spectacular on TV. I bet at the least you had a lot of smoke and stench.

Wed. night I accidentally locked myself out of the house. My walk in garage door has a deadbolt and just a regular handle closure lock. The cheap door handle lock would't close , so, I just went out the door and shut it from the outside. Tried to get back in later and it was locked tighter then a tick.

Around 7 this time. It hit me I don't have keys, cellphone, etc. I tried the patio door by kicking it in and using a hammer on it. I was gonna have to demolish it for it to open. So, I quit.

Cop lives next door went over there in my summer house dress and knocked "can you get me in my house"? "I'll try" he couldn't he called in a friend cop and he tried and tried, etc. No go. They said it's getting dark have to call in a locksmith. I said "fine, I'm not worried about the cost I don't want to spend the night on the patio picnic table".

So, locksmith said "Be about 40 minutes". This time it was 9 p.m. He showed up announced "I don't take checks, cash or card". I said "no problem I got cash just get me in house". He fiddled around and said there ya go. I hollered "Praise God and you 2nd".

He took his 130 and said Goodnight. time was 9:30.

Yikes, Thursday I had another set made of house keys and gonna put outside. My sister said "your life is never dull". Amen !!

FYI girls and guys.

Loew's, Home Depot and Walmart don't make keys any more for you. They got a do it yourself machine that you have to follow the directions, pick out the key you want to use and make it yourself ! Good ol days are over.

I went to a actual locksmith and he took care of all 4

for the same it would had cost at the do it yourself

machines. I got my security system with them anyway.

IF that would had been turned on cops would had showed up. Probably couldn't open it anyway. thought they could get in any door guess thought they couldn't pick the lock just kick it in or use a battering ram thing

Thought they could pick any lock.

They take drastic measures to get into a drug house or such I guess.

So glad you were able to get in the house! Had to laugh at sleeping on the patio table for the night ha.

We have a programmable key pad on the front door and love it. It's like a garage door pad, just have to remember to change the battery every couple years.

Bought another one for the door from the garage into the house, haven't installed it yet.

Figured I'd lock myself out one day too so now don't have to use keys.

I'd be to stupid to remember the code. Have to write it down and it would be in my purse. My car was in the garage. I was really SOL

@SharkE I have locked myself out many of times which now I have a hidden key outside. We also installed one of the programmable locks and love it. No keys needed and it's nice because my son can get in anytime and not have to remember to bring his keys or use the hidden key. My son is the only other person with the code so we still feel secure and he does so much for us so it's nice he can get in without a key.

@SharkE. Do I remember correctly that after your husband died, you said you were building yourself a fortress or words to that effect? Well,I guess it worked! Sounds like you gave it a good test.

If you ever have to break anything, make it a window. Much cheaper to replace and easier to clean up than a glass door.

I, personally, have never locked myself out, but TWICE I was locked out by one of my dogs jumping on the heavy screen (glass in Winter) door and hitting the lock button with his/her paw. (No phone, no purse, not even in day clothes!)

The first time I had to wait four hours outside in my robe and gown until my husband returned home from work! And yes, it was chilly.

I actually DO now have a spare key hidden on my property due to this experience. (No one will ever find it, so no worries).

I often will take one or the other dog out for a quick break late at night when husband is sleeping, and I DON'T want to spend the night outside.

Yes, we have an alarm system, but I would not want to set it off for this situation, as it is extremely loud, and will summon the police.

I am not sure if a programmable keypad will still work if the power goes out--my mother did have one on her garage.

@SharkE Many years ago a couple days after we'd moved to a new house I locked myself out in the rattiest, most awful, barely decent nightgown I owned.

I had to slink down to a neighbor's house and knock to go in and call husband to come let me in. I was mortified.

Yeah, he had guns not hand guns , but, like rifles of some kind gave to a gun enthusiast from church. They were old.

I wouldn't know how to shoot 'em anyway. kill myself probably. LOL

Put in security on the windows and doors, garage door too, no outside handle on it either. Sleep in bedroom with deadbolt and another lock on the door. People have told me a 2 5/8ths deadbolt is your friend. All doors (only have

3) have deadbolts.

Yeah, told the 2 cops glad to know it's hard to break in.

I'm more relaxed now, too. I can hear a flea sneeze my ears are like Supermans. Had to get used to house contracted and expansion. Ice maker kicking out ice.

One side of house has only one window and that's cube glass in bathroom. It's all frosted up now I won't clean it.

If I don't know you or have called you your not gaining entry. Most of the time I carry on conversations outside

no sense in bringing them in unless necessity. I'm pretty good judge of character got like a 6th sense.

I've been blessed with a handyman that I would trust with my life. He's a tad younger then me him and his wife have

been nice. He's not Baptist, but, I'll overlook it. We have a big joke about it he's from another denomination.

@SharkE Considering where you live, I'm surprised you haven't taken a gun gunclass. I was raised around guns, but took a class with some friends and it was a lot of fun, and I actually did learn some things.

But when we took the test, I out shot 'em all! Men and women!

I don't party, go to taverns, drive places outside my comfort zone. All my vacation trips are behind me.

Don't place myself in dangerous situations.

Don't go to sports events. Any large crowds.

Way the law is I'd be the one that would do prison time if I was attacked and killed somebody. The bad guy or woman would walk free. Way my house is set up and with me being the cagey type I've got time to hit

911 before things got too hairy.

This was several years ago, I was coming home from work and no house key. My back storm door was open, however the back porch had a door that opened to the kitchen, and that was locked and idiot that I am, I left the key in the door. I had my parents dog at the time and she stood at the window and barked her head off not understanding why I didn't come in. Several hours later a locksmith got me in, but it is a helpless feeling .
