Litter boxes - how many?

How many cats do you have and how many litter boxes? I had three cats at one time so three litter boxes. Then when one died and I had two cats I still had three litter boxes. (My house is two floors.). Three plus years ago when one of my cats died I kept the three litter boxes. Last cat died, got another still have three litter boxes lol. He uses all three. The funny thing is my stepson has three cats and only one - very large - litter box.

2 cats, two litter boxes. We are down to one cat now but still have 2 litter boxes.

I've always read one more box than the total number of cats. I have two cats and three boxes.

One cat is extremely particular about his routine and likes an empty box each time, so I scoop often. He does one thing in one box and the other in another box. The other cat doesn't care and will use whatever is handy when the mood strikes.

When we had our cat, it was one. I couldn't imagine having litter boxes all over the house like Jackson Galaxy from My Cat from He!! suggests or wants.

We have two cats and a Litter Robot, no litter 'boxes'.

Makes things so much easier.

I don't think I could have cats any more, if I had to do the litter box thing every day. (Been there, done that.)

@Lucky Charm Not familiar with Litter Robot - have to check. I've been doing the litter box literally my whole life - doesn't bother me.

@geezerette I've always read/heard that - one more than the number of cats. My cat does that too - not both things in one box. I scoop often too - keep it clean.

You have to have some room for it. I'd say about 3'x3'x3'.

Our house is rather small, two story, actually one an a half story. I didn't want litter boxes on the main floor and we had a space in a long hall closet upstairs that the water heater is in. So we went for it.

Our daughter had one and once I saw how easy it was to deal with--I was sold. Worth every penny.

There's a vet who specializes in felines who I like to watch on one of the animal tv channels. He always recommends one more litter box than the total cats in your house. If you have one cat, two boxes, two cats, three boxes, etc.

I have 3 cats. I had 3 litter boxes, but they hardly ever used one of them. So, I removed it & they're doing just fine with their two favorite boxes. It's a general rule that you have one box more than the number of cats. My 3 cats are fine with the two boxes though. Which, I'm happy about. They track a lot of litter.

I've had only one box for 2 cats for many years, they've been fine with it. It's a very large box. I only have one cat now, and she tends to use each end of the box, rarely the middle.

The only good place in my house for a box is in the primary bathroom, which is a good thing--my Poppy is an Olympic gold medalist in litter-kicking, so the tile floor in there makes for easy cleanup!

Well, I don't have anything to add as I'm a dog owner, but I read this thread with interest!

Growing up, my family had one cat and one litter box. It was in the basement and the cat knew he had to go downstairs to do his business. It was a three story house. I guess my parents weren't aware that a litter box should be on every floor!

Wow, I just looked at the litter robot. Holy smokes, that thing is expensive!!

Although I don't have any cats, my daughter does. I bought her a cat litter genie disposal unit. It is similar to the diaper genie. She said it makes the scooping easier. Some places discouraged flushing the litter, so this keeps it "tidy" until taking out refuse.

right now we have 3 cats , 2 are from the same litter and prefer to use one box together. So we have 2 littrer boxes at the moment . Anything can change though and there could be a new addition. When we had 5 cats we had 5 litter boxes . They are kept in a guest room that isn't used for guests as we have another guest room on the other side of the house. In this room there are cats trees in front of a large window to watch the goings on outside. toys , there is a bed with blankets and a big down comforter and cat beds . Our cats sleep wherever they wish though not just this room although the 2 littermates love this room and do sleep mostly in there .

we use feline pine in our litter boxes , No dust or perfume smell .it has a pleasant pine smell as they are pellets made of real pine .
