Apathy- Rant

I live in a 525 unit condo development outside of NYC. This weekend was supposed to be a Free 85th anniversary party, which was cancelled due to lack of participation. People around here are so willing to flap their mouths when something goes wrong. I am disabled or I would of volunteered. What gives with this world. I wonder if the same thing will happen with the Halloween party which is being planned. Rant over

People tend to bring that to Florida with them when they come down! Seems to be everywhere these days!

It's something that I guess people aren't interested in. Weekends in the fall have too much to do. Art and music festivals, football games, shopping, visits from people, etc.

And others are too old, too tired, or too busy to go to that event. It doesn't mean they are bad people. They just have better things to do.

I am disabled, but I find plenty of stuff to do volunteering that doesn't require me running around. Phone calls, arranging menu, ordering., greeting lots of stuff to do. I have put together decorations, and such at my table, or in the party facility. I think some people are a little scared too, at least that's what some tell me. They are avoiding big events.

I'm not sure I understand. Was it cancelled because people weren't interested in attending, or not interested in volunteering to make it happen?

I don't think apathy has anything to do with it. It might have been a well intentioned get together, but this is an extremely busy time. Especially for those working or those with families.

This is the time of the year once school starts that people settle into a schedule. Weekends are precious family time, chore time, seasonal tradition times, and weekend sports, sports, sports.

I know for myself this time of year is when fundraisers and charity events are one after another each weekend.

Maybe the neighbors have similar situations as yours and were not able to assist.

If I didn't participate, I wouldn't call people apathetic because they didn't. It would be different if I went all out and then other peoplle flaked.

Do all the residents even know each other?

Do neighbors regularly get together? Are you obligated to socialize with other residents if you live there?

Do they have some kind of committee that plans all these activities, and does everyone get an invitation?

It seems like 43 people is a pretty good number--who made the decision to cancel? What was supposed to happen at the party?

Is celebrating an 85th anniversary condo party really something special? Do you do that every year? (My house is over 125 years old.)

Even if a party is free, I will not go if I am not interested. It is not apathy--my time is valuable, and I want to do what I enjoy. In two weeks I am going to a community party event, and I paid to attend.

I think complaining if something doesn't function well is quite different from having to attend every social function.

I would have gone in the past, but unlikely right now. It's not safe anywhere, particiularly certain cities/states, and I don't want to get hurt or killed.

Of course people know each other this is a series of low rise buildings with anywhere from 4-6 units in them. No they have not had a celebration since the 70th anniversary. 85 years for a housing development is a big deal

@CalminHeartSurely it is not that kind of an area. It is very safe in face we have accidently not locked our door for several nights

i am sure there are people who have only been there for 5, 10 years or less. i personally would not be that excited for an 85th anniversay condo party, especially if i have not been there that long.

i am sure its a big deal for the people that are involved with the condo but for those who are not, i am sure there are a myriad of reasons why they chose not to attend.

was there a letter sent out to get a preliminary head count?? i would think that would have been sent out months ago by the planning commitee. i am sure the answer to 'why' lies with them.

@hkrgrl It was a free party at our community lake and a Sunday afternoon. A letter went out about the event and asking for volunteers. SInce I could not be involved that is all I know. It is not a building it is a lovely garden apt community which happens to be a condo set of many acres of grass and trees with a community lake across the street.
