Black squirrels

Do you see black squirrels in your area? We've had one in our backyard off and on. We feed the birds and of course squirrels come, too. He's beautiful jet black. We saw them when we were in Canada a few years ago. I'll try to post a pic if I can.

Yep, we have them here in MI.

I've seen them while working in Detroit as well as travels to the UP.

I've seen them in heavily forested areas on the East side of the Sandia Mts. They look evil; much larger then regular squirrels with tall, erect pointed ears.

The species is called "Aberts Squirrel"

We feed the birds here too. In the winter we average about 5-8 squirrels during that time. One of them is black. I attached a couple of pics...

See black squirrels all the time, white squirrels showed up a few years ago, both are pretty.

they aren't as common in my town. But, we have one who lives down the street. He comes in our yard once in a while for walnuts. But the crows and 3 other squirrels have a fit. They seem to know their territory

Here in NYC I think one out of every 5 squirrels I see are black. I love squirrels 🐿️

Yes. We have a lot. Mostly black and grey. In the UK, they have red ones. Lately there have only been grey ones. For a long time, I thought the black ones were the grey as young. Turns out they are anothr breed. Cousins to the grey ones. For a while, we had to trap them. They were trying to get in the attic. We would trap and then take them across the river and let them go. The river prevents them from tracking to their home.

The ones I've seen here in Colorado have tufted ears. Cutest darn things ever.

@MoJoV not as many around our house as there were when we lived in our townhome at the townhome there were more black squirrels than the others seeing 4-5 together was pretty normal there we still see them here but not very often

The tufted-ear squirrels are called Albert's Squirrels and they come in a variety of colors. I love the ginger colored ones.

Where I live we rarely see any color squirrels.

But I've seen the black ones in Put-in-Bay (I think that's how it's worded.) on the island They were everywhere! Pretty neat.

My mom had one in her backyard and thought it was so cute. It would come close to her when she sat in her chair.

Then she started hearing noises in her attic. Her black squirrel had destroyed boxes, clothes, books, and other things. I was amazed at the damage. Papers were shredded, and she had to throw almost all of it out.

After that she didn't see the squirrel much. She said he moved on because he lost his privacy!

We haven't seen any here in WPA but a friend in Toronto, Canada has only black squirrels. I have seen them there and would love to kidnap one! LOL!!
