Back To School For Toni

After a fun summer going to the beach, picnics, vacationing at her aunt and uncle's farm in Maine, summer reading and just playing with friends, it is time for back to school for Toni.

She is looking forward to returning to school

and seeing all her schoolmates.

For her first day of school, she will be wearing her apple print dress. It has a Peter Pan collar and puffed sleeves and is trimmed with tiny red ric rac, in the 1950's style, so popular back then.

She is wearing her red patent leather shoes

with little red bows.

Toni has a sweet, crisp, red apple to bring to her teacher.

@Enufstuff Toni wins the best-dressed award for her first day of school 🤗🍎! Absolutely adorable outfit- you did an incredible job sewing her dress and doing her hair 😊. I love the cheerful apple print contrasted by the red ric rac, torso and sleeves. You have such an eye for details and color. The dress has a lovely full skirt and I especially love the mini apple in her hands and the little red mary jane shoes. Color coordinated head to toe.

You're an expert in Toni's dress design and you're a gifted artist. Your work puts a smile on my face and takes me to a different world. Wonderful job, Enuffstuff! 🍎💯💗 Thank you for sharing your Toni creations! I will give this back to school outfit an A+ grade!

One of my favorites and I love how her rosy apple cheeks match her pretty dress and shoes!

Waiting for the school bus the other day there was a young girl about 7 or 8 who got off the bus with the prettiest dress; long golden hair and a beautiful long ribbon with a bow down the back of her hair. She looked like something out of a 1900's English movie.

I was just thinking the other day how I hoped you would show Toni

again soon!

@Enufstuff I was just thinking it's back to school time. Our local district started last week! We normally went back the day after Labor Day. I hope you had a great summer. I am so looking forward to Fall though. The summer just was too hot for me. The last week has been perfect though, a lot of 70's for highs.

I love this dress and the brunette Toni. We wore many Peter Pan collars. I love the bright red, and her cute red shoes! Adorable as always, thank you for sharing. Our family loved starting a new school year. New notebooks, and fun supplies, and new classes and new routines. Haha, then the novelty finally wore off.

@Bonkers1 Toni Dolls made by Ideal, were first sold for Christmas 1949. They were sold until 1958.

I got my first two Toni Dolls for Christmas 1953. I was six years old.

It was one of the most popular and most desired dolls at the time.

I read that in 1958 alone, 15 million Toni Doll dresses were

manufactured for that year. The dresses were sold with the doll and no dresses or other clothing were sold separately.

McCall's did produce a pattern for Toni Doll clothes, so

mother's could sew outfits for the dolls.

I only had the two dresses that came with my dolls.

@Enufstuff @I just love the clean, crisp look of that petticoat and dress. Oh, how I loved my pertticoats. Fuller the better! lol! Mom woukd starch them , and hang inside out, uoside down to dry on line to get puffier look! Great job..l I used to sew. Can't be easy to do those sleeves and collars, yikes

@lynnie61 Thank you. I'm glad that you enjoyed seeing Toni in her Apple Dress.

Summer was very rainy for a few weeks, then we did get the heat and humidity. I stay in with the air conditioning and only sit outside on my porch when it is comfortable. This week has been 70's and comfortable with lower humidity.

Summer was not bad until August. We lost our precious 9 year old Maine Coon, Katie, two weeks ago and it will take a long time for us to get used to her not being here. We miss her so much. She was a very sweet cat. Now she is with her sister, Silvie who passed away seven years ago.

The week before Katie got so sick, I fell and hurt my knee, elbow and pulled the muscles on my left side. At 78

it takes longer to recover from something like that, so I'm still sore, but I'll live. Then, three days after I fell, I got vertigo and that lasted three days. The following Sunday, was when Katie was so sick and we had to travel to an emergency hospital thirty minutes away. I'm glad August is ending.

Schools open next week, in our city, always the Wednesday after Labor Day. The city next to ours, started school this week.

I liked returning to school in September, as a child.

I looked forward to seeing my school friends and wearing a new dress and new shoes. I usually got a new pencil box filled with all the necessary supplies.

When I was raising my family, I had five children to get ready for school. I don't know how people can afford to do that today. I was fortunate to stay home to raise my children

back then. Today, most people need two incomes to raise a

family.

Summer reading was something I always enjoyed.

This summer I read six books. I still love my books. Sitting on

my porch, reading a great book and having a cold drink is one

of my favorite things to do in summer.

@Enufstuff I'm very sorry to hear of Katie's passing. Awww. I'm sure it's been hard, adjusting without her. Thinking of you and praying for you. Hugs. (((❤️))).

My mom was home with us as well. It's such a different world. Costs of things, needing two incomes. We were happy our mom was home when we returned from school. Lots of good childhood memories. I don't have children, but I had several coworkers with kids that had to work. They certainly were "wonder" women, and I gave them a lot of credit. All the school activities, and working and commuting all day. It was hard for them. Evenings with activities, dinner, homework. Little time to relax.

@SportyShorty07 Thank you so much. This dress is actually one that I sewed and sold years ago. I have not been up to sewing, this summer. I mostly read a lot of books, for enjoyment.

I was sorry to learn that you have been going through a stressful time. I watch a lot of you tube videos and I would be under a lot of stress, if I lived in California. I hope that things get better for you.

My blood pressure and stress level have been high since January. Reading books is my relaxation to get away from the computer and information overload.

I'm glad that my children are all grown. I would not want to be raising a family in today's world.

I leave the house as little as possible. This is not what I imagined my retirement to be.

@shoekitty You are right! The fuller, the better! I loved wearing

full petticoats under full skirts. I remember still wearing them in 1961.

Those tiny sleeves and collars are not easy to do

for these 14" dolls.

But, I made even smaller doll clothes for Barbies,

when my three girls were little. Those dresses did

not have collars.

That little girl that you saw, must have been adorable. The big hair bows are an old fashioned style, with long hair.

When I had a 1914 Garden Party, when my house was 100 years old in 2014, everyone dressed in styles of that era.

I bought an antique white lawn and eyelet lace dress for my three year old great-grand daughter to wear. I bought wide lavender satin ribbon for a sash tied in a large bow and used the same ribbon for a large bow for her long dark hair.

My girls enjoyed creating their outfits for that

party. We have had many themed parties and my girls loved

dressing for them.

So sorry to read about your little Katie and your fall. Falling can be treacherous at our ages (I'm 72).

I always enjoy your Toni doll and her outfits! She looks amazing.

I do think that clothing back in the older times were so beautiful. Much more so than today's. BUT they were very hard to keep up, right? I know mommy spent a lot of time washing and ironing.

a little girl of about 7-9 years old.

I have seen Toni Dolls dressed in home made dresses and gowns like adults would wear and it just looks off.

They were created to be fashionable little girls.
