Got an actual call from a dirtbag scammer this a.m.---in regards to MANY fraulent charges on my bank accounts. I never usually answer these unknown calls---not sure why I did this one
anyway.....First his phone kept cutting in and out and then I just plain couldn't hear what he was saying--didn't tell me his name or my banks name, but he was calling as "they" saw many charges from Florida that had not gone thru for insuffient funds-- and was just checking on them. Then finally got to meat of all this----he sent me a link to click on to fix all this BUT...I was NOT to read it out loud as he could lose his job!!!--WHAT????? So I immediately told him that this did not smell right and that I was going to call my bank to check on him----then hung up and DID NOT clink that link!!! As suspected--it was all BS and all is normal with my accounts-------dirtbags!!!!!🤬May they rot in H#LL!!!!

Why would you answer a call from a number you don't know and why would you have a conversation? Now they know there is a person that belongs to that number. NEVER answer if you don't know who it is, even my 95 year old dad knows this.

why answer the phone you just conveyed to the scammer that you are a live person who will pick up the phone

She said she didn't know why she answered I wish people would stop victim blaming. People make mistakes, she isn't the bad guy here.

I would have answered it as well, @wagirl and have done so many times. We are in the middle of an overhaul of our phones, internet and tv programming. my cell phone is now my personal cell as well as my business phone, both numbers ring on my cell tho I did set up two different ring tones. I am gettng tons of calls from area code 202-Washington DC, and it is beyond annoyings so Verizon added a filter to my line.

I don't think you understand. I'm pretty savvy about this stuff and I still got caught off guard by a scammer. I answered the phone because the caller ID said Bank of America. I have their credit card. The caller said my card was being used by someone in Calif and did I authorize the sale. This person actually had all my credit card information - named each card. They just wanted to verify the last 4 digits. My info was already on the black web and the scammers had bought it.

Long story short, I called BOA directly to verify. So yeah, they spoof numbers to make it look legit.

It took a lot of work to lock it down. Went to the credit bureaus and locked my SSN. Got new credit cards with new acct numbers.

I still get some calls and occasionally I will answer because I enjoy telling them I know what they are doing and they're waisting their time on me. It's actually cut down on calls.

And if they're busy talking to me they don't have time to call you.

I never answer a call if I don't recognize the number. If they leave a message, then I will. Even then when a message is left, it could still be a scam...

I only answer a call if it comes up on my Contact list. All other calls go to voicemail.

I have gotten spoofed calls where caller ID said Kaiser Hospital, and one from my bank who left a message with name of my financial adviser. I had a daughter who was had appt at Kaiser the day that I answered that call. It was from some landscaping company. Hung up , blocked call. The financial advisor one had me calling my real advisor to check if it was his asst, which it,wasn't. I don't answer any calls as a rule. But once in a while....poop happens

@CoffeeNut we also have a contact list(directory) but our spam calls do not go to voicemail, they do not ring because we have auto block for numbers not in our contact(directory) list

WHY WHY WHY did you answer????

You just opened yourself up to a bag of worms

you are going to get hit with so many.

Block through your phone and send them to silence or if it's a landline get caller id

If you don't know whose calling DO NOT ANSWER

If it's important they will leave a voicemail

Just because your phone rin gs people doesn't mean you have to answer lolol

I never understood why people say that if you answer, you are confirming that it is a "real" number. If it goes to your voice mail, doesn't that indicate the same thing?

That’s why you use the phones DEFAULT voice mail message and not your own personal message.

They don’t know who they called. 😜

Why admonished the OP who admittedly acknowledged she knows she shouldn't have answered the phone. Haven't we all at some point made a mistake in judgement over something? Sometimes you are anticipating a call and don't pay close attention. Mistakes happen. Lesson learned to pay closer attention. She knew not to open any links.

I have answered calls where I don't recognize the number and for a good reason. I've missed some important calls that don't go to my voicemail b/c my voip service is using some kind of spam-filtering technology that blocks the 'spam callers' from leaving messages in my voicemail.

Many of the callers are spammers, yes. They want me to refinance my mortgage, sell me a new roof, homeowners insurance or buy my house...the calls are homeowner related. So I tell them that I don't own a home and that they've called the wrong number. The number of calls I'm getting now have gone down to nearly none so I'm happy about that.

I think best advice ever, is don't answer...let it go to voice mail. Believe me, if it important or so,done you know they will leave a message. Many, call the home number, and if they knkw me will try my cell. Most of the calls I get that go to voicemail are telemarketers. They hang up. Or if they the current robo spammer, they leave message telling mt it is the IRS, Social Security, or my bank account has been breeches. All of those If I was worried or Leary I can call from numbers on the back of my bank card, credit card or I call my local SS. I usually never even have to do that cause the call is so spammy
