CAR SHOPPING

Today after work I went car shopping with a friend.Keep in mind I have not bought a car for atleast 8 to 10 yrI currently I drive a Buick and really haven't had a lick of problems.I am sticking with this make.I drove a 2022 encore.I liked it well enough but it had 38,000 miles on it and I want something with less miles.Tomorrow The dealership is bringing over a 2023.Navy in color and 23,000miles on it.Does it make me nervous to spend that amount of money?Why yes it does.I bought my last car with my dear parents.They were there every step of the way.For some reason I feel more comfortable dealing with a woman salesman so A very nice young lady is helping me

Did you get a Carfax on it? Most dealers provide them for free. See if it's listed on the dealer website.

Is it Certified Pre Owned? Better car warranty. A lot of dealers want to sell you a used car warranty for an additional $5k+. I wouldn't buy one. Watch out for document fees.

Do you have your own financing or you shopping the dealer offers?

Like another poster stated, all male, female sales person lie. Also, they are ALL nice. Why do you think they want you to pay full price? Ever heard of a car sales person being mean to a potential customer to make a sale?

I was told that several of the smaller car lots in WV and VA are full of late model, low mileage vehicles that were salvaged from major flooding disasters.

@Luvsmyfam. 38,000 miles is nothing on a car. My Saturn suv has 56,000 miles and that's considered low. If everything still work, I'd keep the old car and forego car payments. That's what I'm doing.

I bought my car new in 2007, its a 2008 with 80 some thousand miles on it. I intend to keep it unless the grandkids need a car when they get a bit older, that would be the only reason I would buy a new car.

If your car doesn't have any issues why spend the money? How many miles on it?

Why are you replacing a fairly low mileage car that has not given you a lick of a problem? My best car shopping many years ago was the result of reading a book about car shopping. Got a wonderful car at an amazing price. I kept it for 129,000 miles. Given its age and the fact that I drove alone a lot at night before cell phones, I decided to donate it. My current car is a 2009 model that has never, with routine maintenance, required repairs. I again did my homework when I bought it. Have you, for starters, read extensive reviews and ratings from reliable sources? Because you were happy with one Buick does not mean that you will love another. Or, if you do your homework, maybe it does. Is your shopping friend knowledgeable about cars? Or just a hand holder? And, by the way, one of the things I learned was not to tell the dealer I was paying cash until the final moment. Niceness of the sales person, as others have said, is not relevant -- nor are any "special" things that they promise to do "just for you."

@monicakm @Q-Checker She never mentioned how many miles her current car has on it. The 38k was a car she looked at to buy.

If you have the Carfax, or the vehicle is on the dealer website, get the VIN and call your insurance company for a quote before heading for a test drive.

@Luvsmyfam you are getting much great advice here in this thread. I wanted to remind you to enjoy yourself in the process! It's exciting to be getting a new car (the whole process....shopping, doing research, talking to different sales people, etc.). At some point, you just need to trust your instincts and buy one that makes you really happy.....Only you will know what car does that for you. And remember, not all used car sales people are bad and trying to cheat you. They are just doing their job.....and, yes, they deserve to be compensated, too, in the process. Everyone can win.

Wonderful advice. And can be used across the board in other sales arena. Sales people aren't all bad they're making a living.
