Getting Ready To Dump Cable TV

Presently have had cable tv for decades but my adult son has convinced me I can get all the same channels (on my older tv in the bedroom) I have now and more. The Google TV Streamer didn't work well on my tv, so he hooked up an Amazon Firestick. I'm really impressed so far with all that I get on that Firestick plus just pushing a button and telling it to play whatever I want be it 'Live TV or streaming Netflix or a tv series, or even QVC, HSN, etc.

He told me he would set up an inside antenne ($15) so that I can still get certain news stations that I like to watch that aren't available on the Firestick.

Anyone else use the Amazon Firestick?

@ciao_bella. I pulled the plug about 5 years ago and never regretted it. I subscribe to YouTubeTV and watch it almost exclusively because it has all the local channels plus more other stuff than I have time to see. I also have an interior antenna but find it's often less than satisfactory so I'm glad I can watch without it.

Honestly, I was against dumping the cable, at first, but the price is going up a lot each year and unless I decide to upgrade to Fiber Cable, which they are now offering with my cable company at a price, the reception using the older orginal coaxial cable (which is what I have) will be soon outdated.

We reduced our cable usage and subscribe to several free streaming channels. Also play around with some subscription TV.........rotate thru them.

@sunshine45 That's how I felt, but I was shocked to see that you get Live TV on it anytime, plus you can stream shows/series that maybe you missed or want to catch up on, etc. I get all the channels I had on cable plus more at half the price I was paying for cable. The very few channels that are only exclusive to cable tv, I can still get by purchasing the inside antenne for $15. I only use the one remote for everything.

@ciao_bella, I gave my cable up years ago. At first I didn't think I could do it. LOL.. But I got an Antenna for my tv and a Roku stick. I don't miss cable at all and I'm saving lots of money.

@Kachina624. Our cable/internet with HBOMAX Disney and Hulu is included in our HOA fee otherwise I would probably entertain getting rid of cable. I rarely watch any local or network programming. I mostly stream movies and series

Exactly, my cable is my only guilty pleasure, have cable, land line and internet all from XF, had it for over 40 years. Easy to navigate I need that. And the best part is that I know how to navigate it!!!

@ciao_bella With the FIRESTICK, do you also have to subscribe to different streaming services like HULU, SLING? I have a ROKU stick on a small tv in an upstairs bedroom, I get several 'free' stations to watch but I would have to subscribe to other streaming services if I want more or specific programming.

I have spent an innordinate amount of time trying to figure all this out there are several programs my husband will not give up ad of course I will have to subscribe to at least two different services. I told him I would look again, but this is the last time..he has to decide to keep cable or get rid of it, but everytime the bill goes up, which it just did, he complains.

@ciao_bella . I did put fire stick as an e xtra on all of my TV's. But I bought the antenna and put a fire stick on my TV in the den. My husband used to watch the TV in the den a lot but now he is gone and I did not need a box down there. Works great. I keep cable basically for Sports Channel. Like watching baseball and a few other things.

I just upgraded with Optimum to fiber optic. Very sorry I did. Will probably change to Vetizon.

Same here lol. Especially since my bill recently lowered substantially. We have both cable and internet and rarely have any issues.

Basic Comcast cable is included in my monthly fee. I pay $15 for Apple, Netflix and Peacock.

Can you record? There really is no need to record because you can stream everything at any time for any show.

Yes.... Ruku, Firestick, Google tv streamer...all the same thing just different company offering the same services.

I will only give up cable when it is no longer available. Do not want to deal with "streaming" which I don't even know what it really is!!! I want to be able to turn on my TV and go to whatever channel I want to watch without trying to figure out what to watch--too many choices.

Yes, you do have to subscribe to other streaming services that are not free. However, even by doing so, the amount you pay is so much less than what cable tv was charging you.

In my case alone, I'm getting everything I had before plus a LOT more and even with subscribing to some specific services, I'm paying $100 less per month than I was with cable tv.

@rockygems123 I'm pretty sure you need a paid streaming service to be able to record. We use YouTubeTV and it comes with unlimited recording.
