Volcano erupts in Russia after 8.8 magnitude earthquake

The Kliuchevskoi volcano, the largest and most active on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East, has erupted just hours after two powerful earthquakes hit the region. According to reports from the Russian agency RIA Novosti, citing the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, lava has begun to flow down the western side of the volcano.

Since last week, emergency services have advised residents not to visit the Kliuchevskói volcano and others in the area due to increased seismic activity. Kliuchevskói has a height of 4800 meters and a main crater with a diameter of about 700 meters. It is located just 30 kilometers from the village of Kliuchi in the Ust-Kamchatsky district, and about 4.500 residents could be affected by the eruption, writes A2 CNN.

Kamchatka is one of the most active volcanic and seismic zones in the world, with about 130 volcanoes, of which about 30 are active. Recent earthquakes, one of which measured 8.8 in magnitude – the largest in the region since 1952.

In the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital, minor damage was reported, including the collapse of a garden facade. Meanwhile, in the Sayalin region, flooding was recorded at the port of Severo-Kurlisk and at a fishing factory.

Although this is a REMARKABLE photo, words cannot express how deeply my heart breaks for anyone that is being adversely affected by nature's UNPRECEDNTED fury!💔

Numerous floods, the tsunami's, the earthquakes, fires have displaced SO many people AND wildlife!!! It is difficult to find words!😢 I am sending heartfelt prayers of solace, safety and protection for anyone affected by this!!! I will be donating to the Red Cross but wish there was more that I could do to help!🙏🙏💝💝

It seems like there has been an unusual amount of seismic activity around the Ring of Fire in the past year, including in the US. Makes you wonder what's going on.
