I think the INsurance, maybe be more a southern thing? I have a friend in VA who I believe says INsurance.

Same with umBRELLa is how we say that.

Had a midwestern friend who always said UMbrella.

I'm with those who believe pronunciations are likely regional.

One of my favorite courses when I was a college senior 6 decades ago was History of the English Language. The professor could tell us where we had lived depending upon our pronunciations. I wish I still had the list of words she asked each of us to say.

I know from personal experience that the regional differences also affect our word choices.

It doesn't bother me how someone says insurance or any other word. There are so many regional pronunciations and they're all ok.

So many people have posted comments in the past about mispronounced words. That bothers me more.

Well, to my mind, I dont see it as a matter of mispronouncing. Just seems like differences in pronunciations, often based on different localities.

I find the differences exciting - a kind of "getting outside ourselves," & what we've been used to knowing.

If I were any further south, I'd be in the Gulf of Mexico/America and I say inSURance, along with my friends and neighbors.

Me too, in-sure-ance. Never heard anyone stress the first syllable, though I have no doubt it happens.

I have noticed that some people drop the words "to be" in a sentence. Example: "This needs to be washed." Some will say it as "This needs washed." I just surmised that people say things differently depending on where they grew up.

Soda vs pop
Couch vs sofa
Drinking fountain vs bubbler
Front room vs living room

I don't think I emphasize any part of insurance. I come from one of the insurance capitols of the country and never heard much difference between syllables.

There are countless regional pronunciations so it might well be said differently around the country...and that's ok too.

@haddon9 @Sakuya I see this a lot on these forums and had never come across it before. Seems to be Pennsylvania and surrounding areas from what I can tell. Dropping the "to be" kind of drove me crazy when I first read it, but now I'm just used to it. I never see or hear it anywhere else but here on the QVC boards, though. Language is so fascinating!
