@JeanLouiseFinch I found it odd to receive an email this A.M.from USPS that I would have to sign for a small package today? It is only a $40 item but shipped from overseas. Not today!

I recall my Mother and Father had the day off as a Government employees and not fair as I had to go to school!

We always had cherry pie or cherry cobbler in our school lunches to celebrate Washington's birthday.

I spent most of yesterday trying to locate some pie cherries. I'm going to pick them up today and fix a cobbler.

I'm partial to our 8th President, Martin Van Buren. Raised speaking Dutch at home, he is the only President to have English as his second language. Also, born in 1782, he was the first President not born a British subject and not of British ancestry.

The Martin Van Buren House (Lindenwald) in Kinderhook, New York, a National Historic Site.

useless "holidays"

Serving no purpose but another day kids aren't in school

and we have become a country that doesn't work much

We "celebrate" this and that.... REALLY???

I smh at the state of this country

PLEASE do not tell me in an editorial that it's about HONOR

It's become ridiculous.

In New York State today is officially called Washington's Birthday for the purpose of state employee holidays.

February 12th as a holiday is recognized as Lincoln's Birthday and employees may take the day or use it as a "floating holiday."

I'm a big fan of the more holidays, federal, state, local as possible! Why not!

Growing up in the NYC school system we had two specific holidays Feb 12 Lincoln's Birthday and Feb 22 Washington's Birthday. I do not recall when we celebrated if the day fell on the weekend. It is only since the energy crisis that they now have a Winter break

Dionisio "Dennis" Chávez (April 8, 1888 – November 18, 1962) was an American politician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1931 to 1935, and in the United States Senate from 1935 to 1962. He was the first Hispanic person to be elected to a full term in the US Senate and the first US Senator to be born in New Mexico, which was still a US territory at the time of his birth. In 1920, he became the first Latino lawyer in the United States.

Popé or Po'pay (c. 1630 – c. 1692) was a Tewa religious leader from Ohkay Owingeh (renamed San Juan Pueblo by the Spanish during the colonial period), who led the Pueblo Revolt in 1680 against Spanish colonial rule. In the first successful revolt against the Spanish, the Pueblo expelled the colonists and kept them out of the territory for twelve years.

The statue, slightly larger than life size, shows Po'Pay holding a knotted cord in his left hand, the signal for the initiation of the revolt. In his right hand is a bear fetish and behind him a pot, both symbolizing the Pueblo world and religion. On his back are the scars from the whipping he received as a consequence of his observing Pueblo religious ceremonies.
