DH picked up a pound each of smoked turkey breast & brisket this weekend at the BBQ place. The bill was $36.05. He gave the cashier $40. I guess she entered $36 instead of $36.05 so she told DH she would have to see if she could figure out how much change to give him. LOL!!! He told her $3.95 so she says ok $3.95 I'm glad someone around here can add. It's really sad she could not figure it out.

It's sad. I had a bill for $6.25 and gave the cashier $11.25 because I wanted a $5 bill back. It totally confused the cashier. She gave me back the single, then 4 ones.

They do not teach how to count back change in school anymore. That was one of the first things we learned. When all this technology goes, and it will, we are sunk.

Yes I can, and mostly in my head, with rounded out numbers like-10-15-20 and so on. I became very proficient at this when I was 12 years old working at a drive-in restaurant.

Had to pass a timed and accuracy test with the boss to get this job. I was a car hop, but this particular job was working inside between the kitchen and ice cream/malts, coffee etc. area.

Car hops would bring in their tickets with orders marked on pre-printed menu sheets. I had to add them up in my head and write the cost on the ticket itself.

Then I had to get the ticket filled/get a tray/make sure that i loaded all proper food and drinks on the tray and bring it up to the cashier. Get 15-20 items on a ticket and be able to add them up in my head quickly so I could keep up with loading the trays and get the food out the door.

Too many mistakes and you lost that job and back to just being a car hop. I never got the boot and did pretty much every job in that restaurant from 7th grade through most of high school. Not quite as good now, but better than most that want to challenge for fun.

This is why I hate to get into some conversations with cashier's, so they can figure those sort of things out, if they can. Hopefully, if they can't they have a calculator handy. That's so scary.

No. Have never had a head for math. I call myself math challenged. Oh, and I am 68 so I guess it isn't always today's kids.

Learning how to figure the change for a purchase is so easy, but no one is taught how anymore.

I learned because when I first started working in fast food, there was no electronic register to figure it for you.

I taught my kid, when we had garage sales, and when we worked the snack bar at the baseball field.

They need to stop using a calculator at school. As long as they enter the correct amount in the register they are ok.

I started working at 13 & had to be able to count change back.

Most of my working life I did bookkeeping so I can add.

Hi Nightowlz, et al. Yes, I can also add. But I grew up before calculators were allowed in the classroom and we had to LEARN basic, and then higher, math.

I really think it's a shame when they started making it mandatory for students to have a pocket calculator. They just wooshed right by teaching the thinking skills used in learning basic math.

Why don't they understand that these things aren't about just learning to write or add or any of that? It's about much more than that, in terms of developing parts of the brain that are very important. It's frustrating.

I've also been in situations where cashiers had absolutely no clue how to figure the simplest ability to make change.

I once saw a cashier who accidentally punched in 'out of $20' instead of 'out of $2' and went right into giving the customer change for $20, with those two ones sitting right there in front of her. Like - ok, no thinking required. Fortunately, the customer corrected her because she started to hand over the change for $20 instead of change for $2.

This starts in the home. Parents need to make sure their kids can add and subtract, and use proper grammar. Every day I hear people saying I seen instead of I saw. Just one example of not being taught the correct tense of verbs.

Don't laugh. I once handed a cashier 28¢ with my bills and she didn't know what it was. She stared at it for a while in her hand and then called over another cashier who told her it was a quarter and three pennies.

Many can not count change back or do math and many actually struggle with cursive writing especially when a signature is required. They use calculators, print only, use phones and other devices to conduct business. This is what is done today but you can smile and laugh when the power goes out, when there are black outs, and batteries die, and individuals become bewildered because they have no idea what to do!
