Now, Credit Card Fraud

Last month, my debit card was used out of state, but my credit union denied the charges and nothing was stolen.

I have my account set up to not allow money to transfer from my savings to my checking if there is not enough money to honor the debit request. The purchase attempted was higher than my balance and it didn't go through.

I did not lose my card.

Today, my husband noticed by looking at his account online that someone used his credit card and the charges went through. The card was used at a doctor's office for $299.

He called the CC company to report it and they will investigate and remove the charges.

I have a card and so does he...neither were lost. He barely uses it, but I use it a lot. I think the card was compromised at the grocery store.

I don't use my debit card often, but did use it once at the grocery store. I also used my husband's CC at the same grocery store.

Anyway, everyone please check your accounts often. We were hit twice in the last 30 days.

I hope they catch the offenders. I would think that if you used a card at the doctor's office...a dermatologist, they would have pretty good records of their patients.

It takes forever to get an appointment and most doctor offices require ID with your picture before they accept you as a patient...around here anyway.

@Carmie. A doctor's office is a strange place for someone to use a stolen cc number because they do have good records. I've had several attempts to use my cc over the years and the bank has always caught them, notified me that they canceled the card, and issued a new one.

Unfortunately, these crooks are seldom caught.
Since the Equifax data breach, all of our info is out there being sold on the dark web.

I check my accounts daily and have multiple alerts so that I'm notified of any transactions. I also keep my debit card locked unless I'm going to the bank.

If it was used at a doctor's office, then it should be easy to for them to find out the actual person who committed the fraud. Very dumb on the fraudsters part in my opinion.

Any idea what the $299 charge was for? That's a head scratcher because IDs are pretty much mandatory in medical offices.

Having learned the hard way, I'll share this again. Yes, I'm repeating myself with this one ....

WHENEVER you use a debit card in any retailer of any kind, ALWAYS use your other hand to cover the key pad while entering your 4 digit pin.

Those little black balls over every checkout are cameras. All it takes is one dishonest security person to watch your entry of the pin number and, with the debit card number, they have all they need to drain that account!

(I was also told that the security person could just sell your number and pin to someone else, and then tracking them down becomes almost impossible).

Be careful, everyone.

They say that the riskiest place to use a debit or credit card is a doctor or dental office because pretty much everyone in the office has access to the records and files. I had an issue with my bank debit card several months ago. It was charge from our if state and they tried three times for the same amount. My banked denied the charges and froze the card. They didn't get anything but my bank did issue me a new debit card and they canceled my checking account and opened a new one and transferred the money. Out of an aboundance of caution. I was happy about that but it was an absolute killer deleting my old debit card and providing the new one to all my utilities, stores, creditors. I do have a second debit card that is not connected to my bank, I load money on to it as needed. I use that for my hairdresser, nail shop, doctor, dentist. Im somewhat protected, a thief could only get the money on the card.

The bank told my husband someone purchased skin care items from the derm office. I hope they get caught.

I also wonder how they did it without the actual CC. These thief's are getting to be pros.

Does your derm have their skin care items online too? Mine does, so when you run out you don’t have to go in person to get more. And they have a larger selection they can offer.
Somehow the criminal must have stolen your number in order to order. UGH!! 🤨

All we know is what the bank could tell us. I have no idea how they got the cc info.

Things are scary out there. We need to watch our accounts like a hawk.

@Carmie I had my credit card number stolen. Not my card, but just my number. My bank called me to ask if I had just ordered flowers on my credit card account. I said no. So, then he asked if I had registered a car in Oakland California? Again, no. Well did you open a Verizon account and buy a new iPhone? Nope. And this is how this story starts. I asked my credit card rep how a person could order new phone online, register car online and order Fowers online on my card when said card was in my wallet. He had no answer for that question. Then I asked why they couldn't pursue this case and catch the person because surely car registration, Verizon account, and online flower shop require some way to identify this person and could be traced. To make a short story long his reply was that they were only out of about one thousand dollars or so if they did not pursue the case. It would cost time, a hassle and thousands of dollars in attorney fees if they did. So, they just let it go and sent me a new card and reimburse me for the loss on old card. The kicker to me is that these thieves KNOW if they don't charge a huge amount on a certain card...it will not be pursued, and they are home free. That really chaps my hide.

PS, to those that wonder why I wrote such a long post in one paragraph, I understand. I don't read a lot of posts that don't use paragraphs either. Many have told me if I would just push enter twice it would go down to another paragraph. Not so for me. I would love to fix that because it makes me feel stupid that I can't make paragraphs.

But thanks for tne heads up. We had anotner warning from our sheriff tnat someone got scammed out of $14,000 because tney believed tne phone call tney got last week was tellling them they had to pay the $ or would be arrested on a warrant for missing jury duty.

@cody2 I wish that in order to use a CC you would need a password.

If you don't know the password,the CC would deny.

There needs to be some sort of secondary security measure put in place.

This is getting ridiculous and is costing everyone more money. No wonder interest rates are so high.

@Carmie I wonder if someone had to key in their account # for their credit card. And they keyed in a wrong number.

It depends if the person was ordering on line or in the actual Doctor's office. It isn't hard for the Doctor's office to figure out who used the card.

I worked for a company, most payments were done with credit cards. The company credit card was on file and we manually keyed in their credit card number. After I left the company, the person that was hired to do the job, made a mess of company credit cards by using wrong numbers or other company's credit card numbers.

I had always wondered why my old boss' car was still in the company parking lot every Saturday and Sunday for months after I left. I was told it took months for the mess to be corrected.

I use Apple Pay now as much as possible; your number never gets shared-it uses a one time pass code each time you make a purchase, hiding your sensitive info. Merchants never get your card number- You can add your debit cards, credit cards to the Apple wallet. Very convenient.

Still, somone got my debit card info and went on a spending spree. My card was never lost or stolen. I have no idea how they got my info, but they did.

Thankfully, they never got to spend dime, but they tried....in more than one state.

i thought that was the purpose of the security code, at least for online purchases. That's what doesn't make sense about the Dr. Office charge. If they are ordering skincare products online from the doctor, they would need that security code. Otherwise, if they were buying in the office, they would need to have the physical card.

It must have happened while you were using the actual physical card then... If you use PayPal or Apple Pay for online purchases, they use encryption. Gas stations are notorious for theft-happened to me several years ago using a debit card. My card was never lost or stolen, always with me- I now only use a credit card at gas stations, never debit. I feel for you, it's a terrible feeling for sure, unfortunately quite common today.
