Debit Card Fraud Attempts

I just got an e-mail from my credit union. Someone tried to use my debit card in AK and MN to make purchases and also with Amazon. I live in PA.

The charges were $752.49 at Target

and $400+ at Walmart

Amazon was less than $1

They tried to use the card multiple times and thankfully, it was declined. I only have $340 in my checking account and my account is set up to deny over charges and not take the funds from my savings. I dodged a bullet.

I just got off of the phone with CS. I still have my card in my possession and haven't used the actual card for weeks.

Watch your CC and bank accounts. These scammers are working overtime.

I will make sure I don't have a lot of money in my checking account and check it often.

Dang these thieves!

I keep my debit card locked unless I'm going to the atm to get cash.

Has anyone you've talked to have any theories as to HOW they got your card and pin numbers?

Sorry that happened. So glad your credit union caught it.

They know your spending habits.

Someone was trying to buy some steel in New Jersey one time. The credit union knew it wasn't us. They caught the guy when the steel was delivered or so that's what I was told.

I saw someone was using my Visa card another time when I got online to check when I purchased something. I called to report it. Someone was trying to make purchases as I was on the phone with the fraud dept. They shut it down fast. I would have loved to see their face.

I still had my cards each time someone has used them. I have never lost any card. I have no idea how they got my info.

When these crooks make all these charges with credit cards they don't have the stores are out the money not the credit card companies. The stores don't do anything about it. Too expensive. That's what the guy at the Discover Fraud Dept told me.

Many debit cards can be used as a charge card also. Mine is one of them. They do not need a pin number to use as a charge card.

These days, I use my self-checkout at the grocery store and can get up to $60, no fee. It works for me and it's a much safer environment, too.

A person walking out of a bank could easily have money on them.

A person coming out of her grocery store might still have some money, but less likely, and less likely she'd be mugged.

Times have changed.

No, I got an e-mail and a phone call ( that I left go to voice mail) that said there was a fraud attempt.

I signed into my Credit Union Account and there was a message to call the fraud center.

The Rep was from India. He read me a list of charges and just wanted to know if they were valid... yes or no answers.

Then he gave me another number to call if I see any more charges that are not mine.

I don't know for sure if the charges were attempted on line or in person. The Target Store is in Brooklyn Park, MN.

Walmart, Bentonville, AK and Amazon, WA.

The CSR had a strong accent and was reading and didn't want to go off script.

I have no clue where somone got my number...it had to be on line charges because they would not need my PIN number. Who knows?

I am a bit upset. One of the charges they read was over 9k. I am so thankful, I have auto transfer from savings to checking disabled.

You just have to be vigilant with your cards and check them everyday. I always know what is going on with my credit and debit cards. People are just out to get the consumer every chance they get. Fraud is running rampant and scammers are smarter than ever.

I am glad your bank caught it and alerted you. The $1.00 charge on Amazon was a test to see if it would go through.

Ugh, what a pain in the you know what for you.

I see the Amazon $1 charge. So the next one would have been $$$.

I have alerts on all my cards. If the charge is more than $2, I get a text from the bank. No matter where/what I purchase.

My Discover card was always getting slammed. I've had a freeze on that account for quite awhile. Several years ago, I bought tix for an upcoming performance of the Nutcracker at our local county center, where the Knicks' "B" team plays. The next day I get a call from Discover that someone tried to charge $1,900 worth of Knicks' tickets. Wonder how they got the card #??

The last time I used my debit card was to charge $10,000 for a " Guitar Off my Back" for an Aerosmith concert back in August for my son at JoePerry website.

The concert was cancelled and it took about a month, but the $10,000 was returned back to me.

I also bought $5000 concert tickets. I wonder if someone there kept the numbers. Maybe they thought there would be money in the account. ( I just transfer money as I need it and don't keep a big balance)

I also had a scare a week ago. Someone had our bank account info and transferred $658.00 out of our checking account into their account with another bank. I reported it immediately and our bank transferred the money back to our account the next day while they are researching this Fraud. I never had an account of any type with this other bank and it was only one transaction thank goodness. I'm thinking an employee at a grocery store we shop at and wrote a check for the transaction copied our checking acct. info and committed the fraud. It is a felony and I hope the other bank and my bank find out who it is and throw the book at them. No more checking writing where we shop - I'll pay cash. Only our trash company will get a check as they want $5.00 to pay by phone. We live in scary times and these thieves are devious and very sophisticated.

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you use a credit card instead of a debit card? The credit card would have denied the charges and notified you. It is a safer way to go and you would earn money back.

Long story short. The charges were for my son. The site would only take PayPal. I do not have my CC's tied in with PP except for one, but the credit limit on that card was not high enough to cover the charges.

You can go to your bank account and turn on transactions over $100. It will alert you when it happens. Just a precautionary measure. It is just best to check everyday for your peace of mind.

I get an alert for any transaction over $40 on my debit card. And I get alerts for all transactions on my credit cards.

@elated. My debit card has the same protection that my credit cards have. Ive had it for years and there have been. 2 or 3 attempted frauds. The bank has always caught them and nipped them in the bud.

The reason I suggested a credit card was it would be separate from your bank and you would earn cash back. That was my thought process.

Sorry that happened to you. This is what my bank told me about debit cards. They are easily stolen and if successful the criminal have the capability to wipe out your account. Therefore they suggest only using your bank debit card tied to your checking/savings account at the ATM at your bank and no where else. Not even at another ATM machine.

If you use a credit card you have more protection. Make the charges then pay them off monthly. Many cards you earn money at the same time. It’s a Win Win!!
