Have You Done A "High Dive" Lately?

When I was a kid, we went swimming in what used to be a huge rock quarry that filled up with water. Kids from my high school near the quarry & others went after dark bc it wasn't open swimming there. We wore our cutoffs & tees or snuck swimsuits on under our clothes.

One side of the quarry had huge rocks that were a danger if diving; we never went on that side. One time I swam far out & suddenly felt terribly exhausted; my cousin & his friend swam me back to shore.

I loved diving back then. I used to dive from the high point on the "safe" side into the dark quarry water. I relished that free-fall feeling and never hesitated.

Maturity & life changed me. As a single mom, I couldn't afford to take risks. I had no working spouse to support or help care for us.

Yesterday, I started something that brought back that feeling of the high dive at the quarry. I'm taking a risk & idk how it will turn out. But in this instance, doing nothing would be worse.

Have you taken (an educated) risk lately with a little free fall feeling?

It could be a risk in decorating, a relationship, a new recipe, moving, a new hair style, investing, etc.

How did it turn out?

I haven't done one lately.

I had to jump off the high board at the Base swimming pool as part of the swimming test to get a patch so I could swim at the deep end of the pool.

Once I climbed the ladder I freaked out? I would not jump. Someone came up & pushed me off. LOL!!! That was fun. They couldn't keep me off it after that.

I lived in Base housing all my life so I went swimming daily.

I have not gotten into a bathing suit in years. In the Q world I'm between a medium & large but I just don't feel comfortable anymore wearing one.

As for taking a "dive" my only risk over the last few years has been taking an art class (which I love BTW) when I was in a bit of a slump during Covid. It's been three years since I have been in the class and it's very therapeutic as well as creative.

I'm always up for something challenging but admittedly have slowed down a bit. Not because of age necessarily, I just don't find much all that interesting, anymore.

Last few adventures, I moved 8 hrs away from my hometown after a bad breakup and threat of job loss. My dream job here? Not hardly but it pays very well and I've learned to make it work.

I purchased a piece of vacant acreage. Considering developing it myself for a retirement cottage. Hard to hire anyone reliable.

Took a road trip from MI to MA via the NY Thruway to purchase an item for the acreage I bought. It spoke to me bigly. 😍

I've never been a risk taker whether it's physical endeavors or the way I live my life. I know where I am, I know where I'm going. I don't take unrealistic or unnecessary risks. I think because I don't have to. Especially at this point in my life when I'm in my mid 60s.

An "educated risk" in my metaphor could be as simple as the examples I gave, or going to a new place on vacation, or trying a new restaurant/foods, painting a room a different color, etc.

What? Those things aren't what I consider to be risks or adventured. To me those things are just life. Who hasn't tried that new bakery in town? Risk taking for me is jumping way outside ones comfort zone. Like taking a trip to New Zealand by yourself or opting for a platinum blonde crew cut at your next hairdresser appointments.

You made me laugh @chrystaltree .... it's all perspective....but I agree with you........ziplining for me off a tower would be one for me.

@chrystaltree Going platinum blonde or letting the gray show are taking "educated"/small risks. I've never been to a Thai restaurant & since I usually eat limited types of food, that would be a kind of risk for me. I've never painted a room in my house a deep color, so it would be a risk in how it would change the atmoshphere & decorating. Entering a new relationship is a risk. Learning to do something new...maybe driving if someone never drove. It would be a small risk for me to go alone to New Zealand on a vacay. Investing in a business isn't a risk?

Many times---some of which, I shouldn't be alive today, they were mostly when I was a kid/teenager----but had a squadron of guardian angels then ---those have been pared down quite a bit- today--but yes I have done a few risky things you described--last big one was deciding on super aggressive chemo in a very short time span to rid me of cancer zombies--which it did. Seems like anything else I've done dosen't compare.
