No eye shots for me, just a ton of drops, no IV or any kind of tranquilizer, I promised my doc I could lie perfectly still and he trusted me to do so.

Join the club, @Shanus. It's almost inevitable as we age.

You may not need surgery for a good while. It progresses differently for each individual. Some have their cataracts worsen more quickly, some average progression, then some are like myself. I've been watching my cataracts development for a decade and a half. Slow progression.

I'm due for my annual appointment, but last visit my doc said it wasn't time for removal, since I have a dry eye situation. He said I need to wait until it's a necessity, since the surgery can worsen dry eyes. I don't want that, my dry eyes can already be very uncomfortable, at times, and I'm constantly toting around eye drops.

But, if you need cataract removal anytime soon, you should do well. I've known so many who said the worst of it was their fear, but in actuality, it was a breeze.

I had similar diagnosis as you, but in less than the year I was in the operating room, my vision deteriorated quite rapidly. Surgery is nothing, I had numbing drops in my eyes and nothing more than that, fully wide awake. Just no talking allowed !!! Had second one done 3 months later, same thing. Ask for the Compounded drops, only one bottle to work with, cost 40 instead of being free, but worth every penny. I didnt wear glasses before and still dont.

Cataracts are a normal part of the aging process, so, well....you're not special. Almost everyone gets them if you live long enough.

My opthamologist told me that the average age for catarct surgery among his patients is 74.

I had a very bad cataract form in my right eye as a result of procedures to repair a detached retina. This was in my mid 50's. The surgery to remove the cataract was a piece of cake, especially compared to the retinal repair. My ophthamologist will not give anesthesia for cataract surgery, only a sedative, which I opted to forgo. I drove myself to my follow up the next day.

I had my cataract surgery about 10 years ago, I had not been able to see clearly for a long while and finally relented when I could not identify a friend at a distance one day.

As others have mentioned, don't stress yourself out over it. I had my cataracts removed 15+ years ago and it was a breeze then. I'm sure it's even a simpler process now. I had one eye that was really bad so it was done first. I felt so good that I could have driven myself home. Of course, I didn't but that's how easy it was. For some reason, on my other eye, I had more burning in my eye but it passed pretty quickly. Both times, my designated driver and I went out for breakfast afterwards.

@ I'm sorry your husband had a hard go at the surgery. For mine (both eyes within two weeks was a breeze. Like Kachinka, I walked out without pain or discomfort. It's probably the best surgery I've ever had. The cherry on the cake was that I no longer needed prescription glasses. I get by just swimmingly with Readers.

I had cataract surgery in 2018. Best thing ever. My vision was worse than 20/800. So bad they stopped telling me how bad. My glasses were thicker and thicker. I got the best lenses available and now I'm 20/15. No glasses or readers needed. Only sunglasses. Easy surgery.

DH is still doing drops in both eyes and hasn't had appts. to get new RX for glasses for computer work, etc. So, I'll be next maybe in 6-8 months if I get checked again before the year.

DH had minor anesthesia for first eye and took hours to wake up and go home. Second eye he consented to a "shot" under and in the eye....OMG!!! He had "relaxing IV" and said he doesn't remember anything, but sounds like torture to me.

Very easy surgery if you have an excellent surgeon. I had cataract surgery at 51. That was twenty years ago and it has been perfected since then. My ophthalmologist also does laser surgery for cataracts. One thing I was told was that cataracts change how we see color. Since having both eyes done, I realized how 99% of the makeup I was wearing were the wrong colors. Even clothing colors looked completely different. I actually changed my wardrobe due to that surgery @Shanus .I mention that because I know you enjoy makeup and may be in for a surprise! BTW, I have 20/20 in both eyes. I think you will be very happy when you have it. I now only wear reading glasses but some patients qualify for a lense that includes both distance and close up vision.

OT - Question @Trinity11 : can you use eye shadow afterwards? or, would it mess up the new lens?

I had one eye done but never went back for other eye (no cataract, but had the distance lens put in so until I go back, if I go back, got 20/20 in one eye and close up vision only on the other eye). I was dropped off at 7 and back home by 11, so it wasn't that long and nothing to be worried about.

If I understand you correctly @eddyandme, you mean directly after the surgery? I waited two weeks before using eye shadow. Mascara a month. But I am a Type 1 diabetic and a slow healer.

@Shanus Just chimed in to say that I had both eyes done within a few weeks of each other when I was in my 50's and I can honestly tell you that it wasn't painful, was done on an outpatient basis and was by far the fastest and easiest recovery of any of my surgeries. If you have to have yours done, you will be astonished at how bright and clear colors appear afterward. ❤️
