Wildlife Trifecta

Yesterday we drove through the Upper Canyon area. It is a narrow canyon with dense trees, historic cabins, the river, and abundant wildlife. We rounded a corner and saw this.

The elk and deer are still in their rough winter coat. Our last freeze date is usually around May 27.

There is a foal with a white face that can be seen by zooming into the center of the group.

My best photo with all three in the same frame will not load. The sizing options I used in the past to adjust for this issue are gone. I do not understand what happened, but the three were within feet of each other. It is something not seen often.

@On It. I wonder if that could be the canyon where the cabin was located where I stayed once. There was a US Forest Service building where you turned off the highway.

The cabin was built on the side of the canyon and it was so steep you had to go up about 15 steps to get on the front porch.

I was with a group of women from Midland. We went out to eat in the evening and, coming back in the dark, the biggest bull elk I ever saw walked across the road just a few feet in front of us. Good thing we were creeping along. They're much bigger up close than they appear at a distance. We were thrilled.

@Kachina624 The place where you stayed was most likely Cedar Creek Canyon. It is a beautiful area whose main road begins beside the Forest Service Headquarters. The Hotshots firefighters are based at that location during fire season.

This is a mountain village in Southern New Mexico. The wildlife are on private, public land. We all share this place together. It is high altitude with the tallest peak at 12,000 feet. The village safeguards the wildlife. The photos taken yesterday were about 7500 feet. That canyon climbs in altitude significantly over its 3 mile stretch. We were at its lowest point beside a seasonal creek that flows into the river. The wildlife were there because of green grass and fresh water.
