I found lots of these herbaceous plants while foraging for Morel Mushrooms this morning. Turns out, they're used for lots of things. I've always seen them growing, but didn't know what they could be used for, so I started reading.

I read that it's not only a wild, edible green, but a highly nutritious Superfood! Who Knew?

A member of the mint family, it's sometimes referred to as purple Archangel or red deadnettle.

The leaves are kinda fuzzy and said to be served (to humans) best as the garnish included in a salad, rather than its main ingredient. It can also be added to soups, smoothies, pestos, or tea. It can be used fresh or hung to dry.

The purple flowers are said to taste quite sweet.

It also has been touted as having medicinal benefits. Some have used it in a poultice or salve. One article even mentioned it helping with allergies.

Some dry it and make sachets with it too.

It's preferred over many other flowers by bees. Because it flowers early in spring and can last through the winter in mild climates, it's very important to them.

Please keep in mind, while I've never used Purple DeadNettle, I found it very interesting to read about. We're sure in no short supply of it here either lol. Who knows, I may?

Thats where I noticed a lot of my purple DeadNettle growing, in part shade.

I love morels, but I've been out twice so far and haven't found anything this year. I've been taking my phone with me, so I am getting some nice wildflower and herb pictures lol. But, I really hope it's sunny Friday like it's supposed to be. That will make my morel hunting a lot easier.😃💝

Ive never eaten it, but when I looked it up and read several different online articles, using it in foods kept coming up.
It did say that very large quantities in an infusion at one time may cause diarrhea, but from what I read, that would be a whole lot.

One man said chickens like to eat it too.

LOL! I thought the exact same thing... reread the name and thought hmmmm would I attempt a bite?! @cheriere I wonder if others in your area actually do harvest and eat that!

@cheriere Interesting. Did you sample the leaves or flowers? I wonder if it tastes like mint?

I think foraging sounds like a lot of fun but I'm so super paranoid that I'd eat something deadly poisonous.....

That plant looks like a lovely shade of green! You are giving us all a wonderful glimpse of hiking in your woods - fun exploration before finding your Morels! (Notice I said "before finding" and not "in case you don't find" lol). I'm keeping my posts positive because I really want you to find them and share with your family with steaks YUM! @cheriere You can put large rubber bands around the bottom of your pants legs to help keep them from climbing up your leg inside your pants.

@Icegoddess Great idea! @cheriere Be doubly sure to check your groin area along with armpits, behind ears, all that stuff... My doc said they get many patients in with tick bites in that groin area because they climb up the leg and love that soft skin in the upper leg/groin fold. Ewwwwwwww gross! Hopefully if you do what @Icegoddess suggested, it will not allow those horrible horrible HORRIBLE creatures to travel up your leg!

Well, the mushrooms I'm looking for, we call hickory chickens. Technically, they're called morels. They're really distinctive. I put an internet pic in my Hickory Chicken Thread lol.

Its nearly impossible to confuse these with anything. Other varieties, I'd be scared to death to eat myself.

Ive never ate the Purple DeadNettle. But I have tons growing and I will sample the flowers. I'll let you know what they really taste like too.😃💝

I told ya, I'm not giving up either lol. I was out longer today, even in some light rain. I wore a good hoodie.😃

At least I'm getting these great pics until I find them...which I'm determined too. I want to get some pics of what they look like growing and the area around them, so it may be easier for others to know what to look for.😃

Ive been getting some great exercise too! Hiking up and down mountainous terrain sure burns calories lol.😃💝

@cheriere Google it. You make a tincture or salve out of it. It has many medicinal uses.

I take stinging nettle everyday for allergies. (so does my dog)

Don't be dissuaded by the name. One of the remedies I use is called arsenicum album........(arsenic). Nux vomica is another.

Homeopathy is extremely interesting if you take the time to learn about it. Often times it works better (and is less harmful) than conventional. Really.....

That's a way better idea then just me wearing a pair of joggers lol. I'll still wear them, but the rubber bands around would make a huge difference.

My dad went hunting for morals, im was in the 8th grade back then, it was his first time ,well he got mushrooms,my mother cleaned them,and fried them up, friends came over to make sure they were morals ,they were NOT i had eaten my share,i thought i might die, but did not get sick, don't know what they were,but dad learned to spot morals, and we sure loved them.

Lol, I hate to admit this, but I've had one in "that" area before as well as near my underarm. My eyesight is SO BAD closeup anymore it's pitiful. I've been doing the best I can to check myself with readers on. I've had mom give me a quick once over too. Yesterday, I spent an hour getting about ten off my pant legs in the garage. Yuck!

Thank you for reminding me about this though. The most important reason to use rubber bands lol! I might use them on my shirt sleeves too.😃💝

The more I read about this herb, the more interested I became. I even found several medicinal recipes, as well as recipes for teas, smoothies etc.

Im sure people have been using this forever.

Ive been really surprised by the amount of different herbs I've found just outside the house here. I'm taking pictures of them and trying to read up on them before I make a post. I'm excited to try some.

Once you learn to recognize them, they are easy to spot. I can't recall any other mushroom with it's appearance lol.

Here, we call them Hickory Chickens. I don't know why, but that's what folks in KY / TN refer to them as instead of morels. I just wondered if you'd ever heard that term?

I know people probably thought I was crazy the other day whenever my thread was titled, Hickory Chicken Huntin' Time!😂
