23 and Me DNA

Has anyone purchased the 23 AND ME DNA test?

It has never dawned on me to do it. I have complete my family tree pretty far back

without a thought to look into DNA.

Twice in my spirit for the second time this month it's urging me to do this.

So I took at peak and it's 119.00. I'm not crazy about that and I thought better

jump on here for feedback experiences if any.

Done it along with the health part a few years ago.

I knew my family history so no real surprises there.

The health portion was shocking, but I am grateful for the information so I have a chance to ward off what I am highly susceptible to based on genetics.

This type of test is frequently on sale for $50. We've done them and the results are interesting, especially if your genetics and relationships have no big surprises.

I have, a few years ago. I think it was $99.99 back then. The ancestry countries surprised me a little. I also took the health DNA test and that information was very helpful. I would say to go for it. It's pretty cool information.

I thought they were going bankrupt. I think my daughter has done it for the health aspect.

I won't do any of the DNA tests even though I do a lot of genealogy. One thing you should know is that 23andMe results cannot be imported and used in Ancestry. So, I guess it depends on what you plan on doing with it. Ancestry is pretty much a monopoly and they continue to buy up all the resources.

I had to have extensive testing in order to enroll in a clinical trial. Then came the counseling.

One thing I learned is that there may be legal requirements if a dominate gene can be passed on. I had to sign papers about my kid's right to be informed.

No idea what a commercial site does, but you may not want your data out there.

I haven't used it but other family members have and were excited about their results. But they were not excited when it was hacked last year

"A hacker or hackers have accessed nearly seven million profiles of 23andMe customers, a spokesperson for the genetic testing firm told CNN on Tuesday, including in some cases users’ ancestry reports, zip codes and birth years.

A Friday filing from 23andMe to the Securities and Exchange Commission said that about 0.1% of the company’s user accounts, or roughly 14,000, had their accounts breached by the hackers.

23andMe is standing by that number but is also now telling reporters that the hackers were able to access some 5.5 million profiles that use a company feature called DNA Relatives that allows users to find genetic relatives. In addition, the hackers accessed a subset of family tree information on 1.4 million DNA Relatives profiles, the 23andMe spokesperson said in an emailed statement."

I hate hackers and it seems like they are everywhere nowadays. The only good thing is after all the security updates the company made since then it's probably safer to use now more than ever!

Right before the Pandemic my Brother did 23 and Me and I did Ancestry. Through his test we were able to meet a cousin on my Dads side who knew the history of my Dads Grandmothers siblings, up until this point we never really knew that we lost any family in the Holocaust it was very interesting and heartwarming

I did a few years ago. Really interesting, found out I'm a smidge Ashkenazi Jewish. I was surprised and pleased. You might get some surprises, too. It's fun.

I did genetic testing for breast cancer and cervical cancer.

My brother did an Ancestry DNA test and we found a relative we knew nothing about.

Apparently my grandfather or great grandfather on my mother's side had an illegitimate child. Family met the son of the illegitmate daughter!

I did this ....pretty early on. Once you're in, it's great....you get to continue taking advantage of new findings, etc. I think it's a fantastic thing to do and I would recommend that everyone do this! It's absolutely fascinating......well worth the money. I paid over $300 at the time.

Huh. I have some relatives who want me to have a DNA test...because they don't think I "belong" to the family.

(I don't intend to accommodate them.)

I can sympathize.....I found out later in life that I was the product of an affair.

I have a brother, but he was NOT happy to find this out and wanted nothing to do with me.

I understand, I guess, since I was the product of an affair.

Unsolicited, but I'm butting in anyway. @KingstonMom, No matter how you arrived in the world, you have value and none of the details are your responsibility. He's making you carry a burden that was not in your control in any way whatsoever. And frankly, he is in the wrong and owes you an apology. Maybe it's easier for him to hold it against you than your mom, but either way it's his problem and not yours.

I did the historical part only some years ago for $50. Around black Friday they had a sale at Target. I would watch then as there prices change a lot and they have sales at times. They're always sending me emails to upgrade to health or get a book for this or that deal.

I think its value depends upon what kind of information you're looking for. About 5-6 years ago I did the medical portion with the geneological information added on for $99. The medical information was somewhat consoling. The geneological information was fascinating since I knew little about my parents' or grandparents' families. For $99 I think I got my money's worth. But again, as many say, it's little beyond a parlor game.

This and Ancestry would be a hard no for me, it always has been.

Based on my parents and siblings medical history I know what will eventually kill me and I have no desire to strike up a friendship or relationship with long, lost relatives.

I basically have no family left, a close kinship with two famous people and didn't know about one until late in life. I really don't care to know more--my life is what I've made of it and God blessed me to have. DNA won't change it.
