WENT TO MY PARENTS

Had a late lunch,early supper at my parents house today.When ever I walk into their home,I immediately feel their love for me and all the family.Its so comforting there.We chatted about this last Christmas,and that this was the last yr they are having all of us christmas eve.Now I'm not sure how I feel about this,but I know how hard it is on them to have all five kids,grandkids,boyfriends and everyone else to their home. My sister always has Thanksgiving,and my home is way to small for everyone.I suggested renting a hall,but my mom said bringing in all that food is hard work(mom is 85 dad is 87)I don't know what the answer is to this.Anyway,I was glad to go over there

Why don't you bring your parents to your place? And prepare a nice meal for them, make a fuss over them. Just because. Whenever, no holiday required. You can invite no one else or whomever else. Did this all the time with my elderly parents before their passing.

Ye gads! Your mom is 85 and has still been hosting all of you at Christmas. She should be sitting the whole time, while the younger generations prepare, serve and clean-up. Leave her house spic and span when it's all over. No hall, just everyone pitching in and doing the work instead of your mom and dad.

Absolutely! I cannot even imagine everyone not doing everything possible to make the parents holiday as wonderful and stress free as possible. The shouldn't have to lift a finger. I don't' understand...

OP is in her late 60's. She was complaining couple days ago about going to her parents. Too boring.

Can you help your mom do the pre prep and help her get what ever in the oven?

It's likely she just can't do it all without help.

While the meat is cooking, you could set the tables or whatever to help.

You could have it at your parents house since they have the room but you and your siblings should be doing all the work, its a shame she has done it this long and had to advocate for herself. I took over all the cooking when I was 25 and my mom was in her late 50's.

I still do all the cooking at 62 but I sure won't be doing it till 85 if I last that long! I would be embarrased to admit I let my mom do that!

So true what you conveyed. And to say "don't know how to feel" when told hosting won't be happening next year. How about "feeling" like everyone making things as easy as possible for the parents. Cooking, cleaning, inviting them out to eat. And to their places of residence. A million things can show, demonstrate love and appreciation.

My first thought is to have you & your siblings do the work at your parents' house. Your parents should relax & enjoy themselves while the adult children pay & prepare the food. You can take turns cleaning the house before & after.

Why waste money on a hall if they have the room?!

Planet selfish! The parents have worked hard all their lives, its their turn to be catered to. They need to feel the love and be catered to. Who would pay for this hall that is rented? That wouldn't solve anything, it would make more sense to have the food catered but of course I'm sure your parents would have to pay for that.

By the way putting food away and picking up some wrapping paper is the bare minimum of help! My 12 year old granddaughters do this!

Either the OP is into creative writing or just likes to stir this forum up! Trying to imagine her parents who are in their 80s prepare and lug food around to feed all those people is ludicrous.
