Text Friends

I read many of the posts, either about friends or being alone and lonely. I try to fight the urge to vent, or share. I took have issue with this and I know it's my generation coming forward.
Friends who weave in and out, it's like a text bout who periodically checks in. Seldom sharing but wanting openness on my end.
I get it's a tech revolution and world yet whether it's daughters or others, relationships are had by interaction that reciprocal.
I'm at the junction that if I don't have "friends" nor family that wants to have a two way relationship, I'm ok. My theory is that if a friends doesn't share, then they're not interested in being authentic.
Thoughts anyone?

End it politely with a "catch ya later", "off to start dinner".You're not getting anywhere by playing someone else's game

i dont know about anyone else, but i use texting in conjunction with real relationships. i like being able to say or ask something quickly as i am thinking about it and before i forget it. lol

You and me. I see my friends and family often but am busy. A quick text with a question, answer or thought while I'm doing something else or have only a few minutes helps me. Phone calls hinder me when I don't have time to talk because I'm busy or am somewhere that a phone call is impossible.
I have a family member who refuses to learn text. I'd get to "talk" to her much more often by sharing texts between calls.
But on the other hand, I work with a former friend that I've known for 25 yrs. We see each other repeatedly, daily. She barely speaks now. No reason not to speak ( no misunderstandings, disagreements) and have a conversation, she just acts disinterested. I didn't get the memo.
So I don't think texting can encourage isolation entirely. It's all up to the individual. Imo

I think its lear to you because you know what your thinking but I can't really tell by what you posted that your trying to say that. I don't have anyone that replaces relationships with text.

I just find it more convenient than talking and I or they can text back when they or I have the time to and don't have to worry about being interrupted or interrupting with a call. (weird sentence, I hope it makes sense,haha)

I guess texting could make one feel less connected or lonely especially if you are a more social person but I'm more of a loner who has always sorta hated talking on the phone so texting actually helps keep me more connected to people than before it was a thing.

@katie1859 - If a friend or family member wants to text instead of a phone call, I'm okay with it. I know we'll talk eventually. Somedays I'd rather text than pick up the phone and place a call.

I agree sometimes. If I have a question, I don't want to talk 30 minutes. Sometimes I need to chat because descriptions of our subject could take pages.

I have best friends and beloved sisters that I frequently text as well as call. (....and they to me as well.)

The general rule of thumb is that a quick text is best for shorter,quicker interactions like"What time Friday night?"

or "Did you get the Kuhn Rikon collapsible strainer?"

If it is something that would require an extended back and forth ( or something personal like a Happy Birthday wish) then it is a phone call. Nobody likes a three page text!

Texting is great if you are unsure if you will be reaching out at an inopportune time.

@katie1859 Sort of understand what you are talking about. I found that my relationship w/my brother and his wife usually was instigated by me via text.

Occasionally, she will send me a text but never sharing what's going on in their lives, something generic like "this photo reminds me of the dog you grew up with" I'm sort of scratching my head thinking "what's up with that? "

For me, I would rather send an email than text if you don't feel like talking on the phone. I only use my cell phone for emergency calls, etc., we still have and use a landline. Hubby uses his cell to text/call all the time.

My family and good friends all have crazy busy lives..There are times they just can't answer a phone call.

We text everyday just to check in.We always have an at length phone conversation at least once a week..If there is a problem of course we talk more often.

@sunshine45 Sometimes I just use texting as a "check in" if I know my friends are busy or out of town. Those who only text and never have time to actually have a conversation on the phone? Well those friends I think about whether to continue that relationship.

Way before texting and cell phones, I'd get calls all the time...while I was busy cooking, working, taking care of my kids, etc. It's much better to get a text and call back if it's required.

Forgive me if I misunderstood but it seems like you want people to share their deepest, personal experiences with you. Why? I'm fortunate to have maintained friendships and acquaintances. When we talk or text, it's usually light stuff. Silly stuff. Like "did you see RHNY last night? 🤣". Like that. Deep, personal discussions are just with a couple of long time friends. I don't know if it's generational. I think not. I'm in my mid 60s.
